Radio dramatisation between diegesis and mimesis

Abstract:

Rozhlasová dramatizace v sobě vždy mísí diegetické (vyprávěcí) a mimetické (předváděcí) prvky. Tato „dvojdomost“ se proměňuje jak díky autorským, dramaturgickým či režijním přístupům, tak díky vývoji technologií záznamu a vysílání. I dnes je však nutné tuto otázku v praktické rozhlasové dramaturgii řešit, a proto se v této diplomové práci se zabývám právě problematikou převedení epického textu do dramatické podoby v rozhlasovém médiu. Zkoumám v ní možnosti a omezení, se kterými se musí autor rozhlasové dramatizace potýkat, dále postavu vypravěče a principy vyprávění zvukem. Na příkladech z mé dramaturgické praxe v Českém rozhlase se také věnuji dramatizované četbě, adaptaci divadelní hry, rozhlasové dramatizaci a krátce také rozhlasové hře samotné. Jádrem této práce je rozbor čtyř rozhlasových dramatizací, které ukazují odlišné přístupy dramatizátorů a zároveň mapují vývoj rozhlasových technologií a práce se zvukem. Zástupcem monofonie je Čapkova Válka s mloky v režii Jiřího Horčičky z roku 1958, v níž má zvuk funkci scénografie. Kafkova Proměna v režii Josefa Henkeho z roku 1967 ukazuje principy „introvertní“ stereofonie, která se obrací směrem dovnitř postavy. Naopak „extrovertní“ stereofonii demonstruje barvité rozhlasové zpracování Haileyho Letu do nebezpečí z roku 1980 v režii Jiřího Horčičky. Poslední analyzovanou rozhlasovou hrou je digitálně vytvořený Spalovač mrtvol v režii Aleše Vrzáka z roku 2017. Vzhledem k tomu, že autorkou této dramatizace jsem já sama, je tento rozbor zároveň reflexí mých vlastních zkušeností.

Abstract:

A radio dramatisation always ties together both diegetic (narrative) and mimetic (imitative) elements. The close relationship between the two changes depending on the creative approach chosen by authors, dramaturgists or directors, as well as on how recording and broadcasting technologies have gradually progressed over time. One thing has, however, remained constant: It is absolutely vital to consider the balance between these elements while adapting an epic piece of work to the radio format. And that is what I am exploring in this diploma thesis. I look into the constraints an author of a radio adaptation must take into account, I analyse the role of the narrator and the possibilities and principles of storytelling through sound. Parts of the thesis also explore dramatic readings, theatre play adaptations, radio dramatisations and radio drama itself – all based on my previous working experience as a dramaturgist for the Czech Radio. At the core of this thesis lies an analysis of four radio dramatisations. They have been chosen in order to illustrate different perspectives the dramaturgists have elected in each case, and at the same time they showcase the evolution of broadcasting technologies and sound design in general. Čapek’s War with the Newts, directed by Jiří Horčička (1958), is a notable example from the monophonic era, where sound has a purely scenographic function. Josef Henke’s direction of Kafka’s Metamorphosis (1967) on the other hand introduces the principles of an ‘inward-looking’ stereophonic sound that explores the inner world of the protagonist. Stereophony then takes a more ‘extroverted’ approach in the acoustically vivid adaptation of Hailey’s Flight into Danger, directed by Jiří Horčička (1980). The final subject of my analysis is The Cremator, created digitally and directed by Aleš Vrzák in 2017. And as I am the author of this particular dramatisation, this analysis is in part a reflection of my own experience.
