Jednou z mála známých fotolabilních chránících skupin na dioly je 2-nitrobenzylidenová skupina. Byla popsána vysoká stereoselektivita odštěpení diolů chráněných touto skupinou, která však nebyla potvrzena v nejnovějším výzkumu jejího odchránění. 2-Nitrobenzylidene moiety is one of the few known photoremovable protecting groups suitable for diols. High stereoselectivity of cleavage of diols protected by 2-nitrobenzylidene group was described, but it was not confirmed in recent unpublished study of deprotection of diols caged by this group.
