Who is afraid of Franz Kafka? Kafka's miniatures in German as a Foreign Language classes

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the short stories of the prominent Prague German writer Franz Kafka, who belongs inseparably to the canon of not only Czech but also world literature. The summary of the literary-historical aspects of Kafka's short story production and the principles of literary didactics in the theoretical part of the thesis thus constitutes an essential starting point for the practical part of the thesis. The practical part of this study focuses on the miniatures selected from the Betrachtung collected edition of the stories and the posthumous edition. The individual miniatures are subjected to a literary analysis, followed by a linguistic and didactic analysis, which is further supported by methodological recommendations for teaching. The aim is to propose a procedure for working with the short stories in German language teaching. The thesis thus demonstrates that Kafka's texts can be worked with in German language teaching at several language levels in a fun and varied way. Among other things, the work also contributes to ensuring that Franz Kafka is not (not only) perceived by pupils exclusively as the author of texts that are difficult to read or understand.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se věnuje povídkové tvorbě významného pražského, německy píšícího spisovatele Franze Kafky, který neodmyslitelně patří do kánonu nejen české, ale i světové literatury. Shrnutí literárně-historických aspektů Kafkovy povídkové tvorby a principů literární didaktiky v teoretické části práce tak představuje zásadní východisko pro praktickou část práce. Praktická část této studie se věnuje miniaturám, které byly vybrány ze souborného vydání povídek Betrachtung a posthumního vydání. Jednotlivé miniatury jsou podrobeny literární analýze, na kterou navazuje analýza jazykově didaktická, která se dále opírá o metodická doporučení do výuky. Jejím cílem je navržení postupu, jak s danými povídkami ve výuce německého jazyka pracovat. Práce tak dokládá, že s Kafkovými texty lze ve výuce německého jazyka pracovat na vícero jazykových úrovních, a to zábavně a pestře. Práce mj. také přispívá k tomu, aby Franz Kafka nebyl (nejen) žáky chápán výhradně jako autor čtenářsky náročných či nepochopitelných textů.
