Extension of clustering analysis tool for cybersecurity exercises

Abstract:

Analýza správania jednotlivca je komplexná oblasť kybernetickej bezpečnosti. Meranie takýchto údajov môže byť náročné na pochopenie aj pre skúseného človeka. Vizualizácie týchto informácií by teda mohli zjednodušiť pochopenie údajov, poskytnúť viac náhľadov a prípadne odhaliť zaujímavé informácie, ktoré v pôvodných údajoch nebolo možné vidieť. Hlavným účelom tejto práce je rozšírenie nástroja od Jakuba R. Mlynárika, ktorý kombinuje klastrovanie a vizualizácie s cieľom poskytnúť pohľad na povahu správania účastníkov počas kyberbezpečnostných cvičení. Táto práca najskôr popisuje behaviorálnu analýzu a kyberbezpečnostné hry v tejto oblasti. Následne poskytuje prehľad klastrovacích metód spolu s príkladmi klastrovacích algoritmov. V práci sú popísané zmeny a vylepšenia vykonané na backendovej aj frontedovej časti nástroja, vrátane integrácie metód zhlukovania na základe hustoty implementáciou klastrovacieho algoritmu OPTICS a poskytuje podrobnosti o vylepšeniach vizualizácií. Navrhované riešenie bolo analyzované z hľadiska výkonu a zhodnotené odborníkmi z oblasti kybernetickej bezpečnosti.

Abstract:

Analyzing an individual's behavior is a complex field in cybersecurity. Measuring such data might be challenging to understand, even for an experienced person. Thus, visualizations of data could simplify the understanding of data, providing more insights and possibly revealing interesting discoveries that could not be seen in the original data. The primary purpose of this thesis is to extend a tool previously created by Jakub R. Mlynárik, which combines clustering and visualizations to provide insights into the nature of trainees' behavior during cybersecurity exercises. This thesis first describes the behavioral analysis and gamification concepts in this field. Subsequently, it provides an overview of clustering methods along with examples of clustering algorithms. Furthermore, the thesis describes the modifications and improvements made to both the backend and fronted part of the tool, including the integration of density-based clustering methods by implementing the OPTICS clustering algorithm and providing details about the visualization enhancements. The proposed solution was analyzed in terms of performance and evaluated by experts from the field of cybersecurity.
