"Worrying about China" discourse and thematic analysis of the works of modern Chinese writer Chen Qiufan

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá tvorbou současného čínského science fiction spisovatele Chen Qiufana 陈楸帆. Práce si klade za cíl prozkoumat tvorbu autora a zanalyzovat, jakým tématům se Chen primárně věnuje. Dalším cílem je rovněž zjistit, do jaké míry je tato tvorba součástí diskurzu „obav o Čínu“. Pomocí diskurzivní analýzy byl proveden výzkum 15 různých povídek autora od začátku jeho tvorby v 90. letech 20. století až po současnost a také jeho prvního a zatím jediného románu „Příliv z odpadků“, který byl vydán v roce 2013. Byla vyčleněna nejběžnější témata, jimž se autor věnuje. Výsledkem práce je rovněž seznam kritérií, dle nichž lze určit, která literární díla jsou součástí diskurzu „obav o Čínu“, a která nikoliv.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the works of contemporary Chinese science fiction writer Chen Qiufan 陈楸 帆. The aim of this thesis is to examine literary works of the author and to analyse what topics Chen is primarily concerned with. This thesis also focuses on finding out to what extent each of author’s works is part of the "worrying about China" discourse. Using a discursive analysis, research was conducted on 15 different stories by the author, from the beginning of his literary career in the 1990s to the present, as well as his currently one and only novel "Waste Tide", which was published in 2013. During the research, the most common topics of author’s works have been identified. The thesis also brings the list of criteria according to which it is possible to determine which literary works are part of the "worrying about China" discourse and which are not.
