Critics and alternatives of bureaucratic organizations

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá dvěma základními tématy. Zaprvé se jedná o shrnutí kritik byrokracie a racionalizace u některých sociologů a jejich zasazením do souvislostí. Zadruhé se snažím stručně přiblížit některé předkládané alternativy. První část se tedy snaží nalézt podobnosti mezi kritikami sociologů, záměrně vybraných tak, aby pole názorů bylo pestré. Těmto sociology jsou Max Weber, Karl Marx, Robert K. Merton, Pierre Bourdieu, Michael Crozier, George Ritzer a Zygmund Bauman. Podobnosti nacházím zasazením jednotlivých názorů do dvourozměrného pomocného modelu, ve kterém se ukazují jak očekávané podobnosti (například mezi Weberem a Mertonem), tak podobnosti možná překvapivější (například mezi Baumanem a Crozierem). Druhá část, v podobném duchu představuje tři velice odlišné alternativní formy organizace (teorii sítí, komunity a kolektivistické organizace). Stručně popisuje základní principy jejich fungování a stejně jako v první části je pro větší názornost vkládá do modelu, který odhaluje ve kterých aspektech jsou si jednotlivé varianty vzdálené či naopak blízké. Přestože jsou kritiky byrokracií a racionalizace i jednotlivé alternativy značně různorodé, v obou případech jsou v práci vyznačeny hranice, které mají jednotlivé teorie společné a dají se podle nich tedy porovnávat.

Abstract:

This work considers two main topics. First, it summarizes and contextualizes critiques of bureaucracy and the process of rationalization in works of some well known sociologists; secondly, it briefly introduces some possible alternatives to bureaucracy. The first part tries to find the similarities among different theories, which have been carefully chosen in order to present as many perspectives as possible. The sociologists discussed are Max Weber, Karl Marx, Robert K. Merton, Pierre Bourdieu, Michael Crozier, George Ritzer and Zygmund Bauman. With the help of a two-dimensional model, I have found some expected similarities, like between Weber and Merton, but some less obvious parallelisms like in the case of Bauman and Crozier, too. The second part names three possible alternatives to the bureaucratic way of organizing. These alternatives are the network society, community life and the collectivistic organizations. It comments briefly on the basic characteristics of each and similarly to part one, it places them into a model. If seen through this, the similarities as well as the differences shall come forward and be recognizable more easily. Even though both the critiques and the mentioned alternatives are quite different in both cases I have found boundaries which make it possible to compare and contrast them.
