The impact of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline on EU energy security and the associated US economic interests

Abstract:

Cílem práce je posoudit, jaký dopad může mít dostavba plynovodu Nord Stream 2 na energetickou bezpečnost EU a jakým způsobem může ovlivnit ekonomické zájmy USA v evropském plynárenském sektoru. První kapitola teoreticky vymezuje energetickou bezpečnost, mezinárodní teorie s ní spojené a způsoby měření. Následuje druhá kapitola, která je věnována plynárenskému sektoru EU. Jejím výsledkem je určit význam plynovodu pro EU. Třetí kapitola je zaměřena na postoj Spojených států vůči plynovodu a jejich zájmy v plynárenském sektoru EU. V závěru této kapitoly se rozebírá možný vliv plynovodu na konkurenční prostředí pro USA.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis aims to assess the impact that the completion of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline may have on the EU's energy security and how it may affect US economic interests in the European gas sector. The first chapter theoretically defines energy security, international theories associated with it, and methods of measurement. The second chapter is devoted to the EU gas sector. The result is to determine the importance of the pipeline for the EU. The third chapter focuses on the attitude of the United States towards the pipeline and its interests in the EU gas sector. At the end of this chapter, the possible impact of the pipeline on the competitive environment for the USA is discussed.
