Ethnography of Vocational School

Abstract:

This diploma work uses etnographic research method in order to examine the environment and the background of the vocational school and its students of the first grade. In the center of attention of this work is the choice and its semantic and causal background. Vocational school is a school that is specific in terms of its focus on students with physical or mental handicap. This is important both in terms of its functioning in the system of the secondary education facilities, as well as in terms of its social functioning in relation to visiting students and its reference to the wider social framework. In this context, we will also pay attention to the phenomenon of stigma (Goffman: 2003), which is for students to a greater or lesser extent associated with the visited the school. The way students cope with this feature will be mentioned as well. Dimension of social classification, which is in case of the students included in choice of secondary school, will be grasped trough the use of the concepts of differentiation and creation of the social fields related to the set of social positions. (Bourdieu, Passeron: 1990) As these terms may predict, this work will take advantage of the use of conceptual apparatus by Pierre Bourdieu. On the question of inequality in education we will, among other aspects, use the perspective of the operation of the language in the teaching practice. (Bernstein: 1977 and 1990, Bourdieu and Passeron: 1990) In order to understand the choice of secondary school, it is also necessary to consult the students' history, especially in terms of what kind of experiences and understandings are associated with their visit of the elementary school. These excursions into the students' biographies could help us in deepening of the connection to what range and kind of events has influenced the choice of secondary school.Further in this regard, we will pay attention to the perception of failure, which is in some way associated with student’s attendance of the primary school education and predictably in relation to the schooling in general. In this respect it is also possible to look at the choice of the school as a manifestation of an acquired social habitus (Bourdieu: 1990).

Abstract:

Táto práca využíva etnografickú výskumnú metódu pre skúmanie prostredia odborného učilišťa a jeho navštevujúcich žiakov prvého ročníka. V centre pozornosti práce je voľba skúmanej školy a jej významové a kauzálne pozadia. Odborné učilište je školou, ktorá je špecifická z hľadiska jej zamerania na žiakov s fyzickým alebo mentálnym hendikepom. Táto skutočnosť je významnou tak z hľadiska jej fungovania v systéme stredoškolských zariadení, ako aj z hľadiska jej sociálneho fungovania vo vzťahu k navštevujúcim žiakom a vzťahu žiakov v rámci širšieho sociálneho rámca. V tejto súvislosti budeme venovať pozornosť aj fenoménu stigmatizácie (Goffman: 2003), ktorý sa pre žiakov vo väčšej, či menšej miere spája s návštevou skúmanej školy a spôsobom, akým sa žiaci s týmto vyrovnávajú. Dimenziu sociálneho zaradenia, ktorú voľba strednej školy pre žiakov prináša, uchopíme prostredníctvom konceptu diferenciácie a utvárania sociálnych polí a s nimi súvisiacich sociálnych pozícií. (Bourdieu, Passeron: 1990) Ako tieto pojmy už možno naznačujú, budeme v práci využívať predovšetkým konceptuálny aparát Pierra Bourdieu. Na otázku nerovností vo vzdelávaní budeme, okrem iného, v práci nahliadať i prostredníctvom pôsobenia jazyka v pedagogickej praxi. (Bernstein: 1977 a 1990, Bourdieu a Passeron: 1990) Pre pochopenie voľby strednej školy je potrebné nahliadnuť tiež do žiackych histórií, predovšetkým toho, aké zážitky a skúsenosti sa spájajú s ich návštevou základnej školy. Tieto exkurzie do žiackych biografií nám pomôžu odhaliť hlbšie súvislosti toho, čo voľbu strednej školy ovplyvnilo. Bližšie budeme venovať našu pozornosť percepciám neúspechu, ktoré majú žiaci spojené so vzdelávaním na základnej škole a predpokladateľne i vo vzťahu ku škole vo všeobecnosti. V tomto smere je tiež možné nazerať na voľbu školy ako na prejavenie určitého získaného sociálneho habitu žiakov (Bourdieu: 1990) .
