Motivational potential of an incentive-based reading game

Abstract:

Diplomová práce Motivační potenciál čtenářské hry založené na odměnách zkoumá možnosti zvýšení motivace žáků ke čtení pomocí čtenářské hry vytvořené pro tento účel. První část práce představuje teoretické pozadí týkající se jiných čtenářských programů fungujících na bázi odměn, faktorů ovlivňujících množství čtení a behavioristické teorie učení. Druhá část poté představuje metodologii použitou k vytvoření a vyhodnocení hry, společně s výsledky a jejich interpretací. Experiment byl proveden ve čtvrté a šesté třídě základní školy po dobu čtyř týdnů. Celkově, tato hra nedokázala motivovat dostatečně velké množství žáků, aby se dala považovat za úspěšnou.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis Motivational potential of an incentive-based reading game explores the possibility of enhancing pupils’ motivation to read by means of a reading game designed for this purpose. The first part presents the theoretical background concerning other incentive-based reading programmes, factors influencing the amount of reading, and behaviourist learning theory. The second part then presents the methodology used for designing and evaluating the game, together with the results and their interpretation. The experiment itself was conducted in grades 4 and 6 of a Czech elementary school over a period of four weeks. Overall, the game did not motivate a sufficiently large number of pupils to read in order to be considered successful.
