Influence of sea ice cover on air temperature in the central part of Svalbard

Abstract:

The effect of sea ice extent on air temperature was studied in Petuniabukta and Adventfjorden near the Longyearbyen station on Svalbard Archipelago in the years 2015–2018. The extent of sea ice was evaluated using the Norwegian sea ice charts created from satellite images in winter season, the temperature characteristics were calculated from hourly air temperature data at both stations. The air temperature evaluation confirmed significant differences between the stations (2-3 °C), especially in winter season, when temperatures at Petuniabukta were significantly lower than at Longyearbyen. The sea ice extent in Petuniabukta formed every year during the autumn season (October-November) and disappeared at the beginning of the summer season (June). In the Longyearbyen area, sea ice formed during the first two winter seasons only (in April, May and June). In winter 2017-2018 the sea ice formed during January and disappeared at the end of April. Testing of statistical significance showed that temperature differences between both stations were caused by differences in the sea ice occurence at the studied areas, especially in winter and spring (November-June). Air temperature differences were also affected by the wind direction differences, which was associated with the local topography. The prevailing wind directions at Petuniabukta station were observed from the north, while at Longyearbyen station from the southeast sector.

Vplyv morského zámrzu na teplotu vzduchu bol študovaný v zátokách Petuniabukta a Adventfjorden, nachádzajúcej sa pri stanici Longyearbyen v súostroví Svalbard v období 2015–2018. Rozsah morského ľadu bol hodnotený použitím nórskych máp morského ľadu vytvorených zo satelitných snímkov v zimných obdobiach. Teplotné charakteristiky obidvoch staníc boli vypočítané na základe hodinových údajov teploty vzduchu. Vyhodnotenie teploty vzduchu potvrdilo významné rozdiely medzi stanicami (2 až 3 °C), najmä v zimnom období, kedy sú teploty v Petuniabukte výrazne nižšie než v Longyearbyene. Morský ľad v Petuniabukte sa vytváral každý rok počas jesene (október-november) a zanikal na začiatku leta (jún). V oblasti Longyearbyenu sa morský ľad vytvoril počas prvých dvoch zimných období iba výnimočne, a to v mesiacoch apríl, máj a jún. V zime 2017/2018 sa morský ľad vytvoril počas januára a zanikol na konci apríla. Na základe testovania štatistickej významnosti vyplýva, že teplotné diferencie medzi oboma stanicami boli spôsobené rozdielmi vo výskyte morského ľadu v záujmových územiach, najmä v zime a na jar (november-jún). Rozdiely v teplote vzduchu boli tiež ovplyvnené rozdielmi smeru vetra, súvisiacimi s lokálnou topografiou. Prevládajúce smery vetra na stanici Petuniabukta boli pozorované zo severu, zatiaľ čo na stanici Longyearbyen z juhovýchodného sektoru.
