Sorption of Co and Cu ions on the alkali-modified bentonites

Abstract:

V práci byla studována sorpce Co2+ a Cu2+ iontů na alkalicky modifikované bentonity. K aktivaci bentonitu byl použit roztok NaOH a Na2CO3. Část materiálu byla následně kalcinována. U připravených materiálů byla proměřena časová závislost sorpce a byly stanoveny adsorpční izotermy. Byla porovnána sorpční schopnost připravených materiálů. Pro sledování koncentrace iontů kovů v roztocích byla použita atomová absorpční spektrometrie (AAS). Informace o struktuře a chemických vlastnostech připravených materiálů byla získána metodou infračervené spektrometrie (FTIR). Bylo zjištěno, že u kalcinovaných materiálů došlo vlivem vysoké teploty ke kolapsu struktury. U kalcinovaných vzorků byla proto adsorpce nejnižší. Po aktivaci vykazovaly nekalcinované vzorky lepší adsorpční kapacitu než u původních materiálů. U Cu2+ iontů dosahovala u původního materiálu adsorpční kapacita 0,083 mmol/g, zatímco po aktivaci NaOH vzrostla na 0,226 mmol/g a po aktivaci Na2CO3 na 0,186 mmol/g. Podobný trend byl zaznamenán i u Co2+ iontů. Původní bentonit měl adsorpční kapacitu 0,043 mmol/g, aktivovaný NaOH 0,095 mmol/g a aktivovaný Na2CO3 0,103 mmol/g. Adsorpční izotermy u vzorků aktivovaných Na2CO3 vykazovaly nejednoznačný trend.

Abstract:

This work studied the sorption of Co2+ and Cu2+ ions onto alkali-modified bentonites. NaOH and Na2CO3 solutions were used to activate the bentonite. Part of the material was subsequently calcined. The time dependence of the sorption on prepared materials was measured, and the adsorption isotherms were determined. The sorption capacities of the prepared materials were compared. Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS) was used to monitor the concentration of metals ions in solution. Information on the structure and chemical properties of the prepared materials was obtained by infrared spectrometry (FTIR). It was found that the calcined materials showed a collapse of structure due to high temperature. Therefore, the adsorption was lowest on calcined samples. After activation, the non-calcined samples showed better adsorption capacities than the original material. For Cu2+ ions, the adsorption capacity of the original material was 0.083 mmol/g, while after activation with NaOH it increased to 0.226 mmol/g and after activation with Na2CO3 to 0.186 mmol/g. A similar trend was observed for Co2+ ions. The original bentonite having an adsorption capacity of 0.043 mmol/g, 0.095 mmol/g after NaOH activation and 0.103 mmol/g after Na2CO3 activation. The adsorption isotherms for the Na2CO3-activated samples showed an ambiguous trend.
