Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá analýzou hlavních ženských postav a jejich vývoje v románech Panna v zahradě (1978) a Zátiší (1985) spisovatelky A. S. Byattové a Zářivá cesta (1987) a Přirozená zvědavost (1989) Margarety Drabbleové. Práce je rozdělena na tři hlavní části. První část je teoretická a zabývá se úlohou postavy v rámci literárního díla a také otázkou feminismu. Čtenář se zde seznámí jak s historií feministického hnutí, tak s krátkým pojednáním o samotných autorkách - zda se samy považují za feministické spisovatelky a zda jejich díla vykazují alespoň nějaké feministické rysy. Druhá část práce pojednává o životě a díle autorek a krátce seznamuje čtenáře s obsahem všech čtyř románů. Poslední a nejobsáhlejší část analyzuje hlavní ženské postavy a jejich vývoj v rámci příběhů. Tato část je rozdělena do čtyř podkapitol. První podkapitola pojednává o postavách sester Frederiky a Stephanie Potterových z románů Byattové. Druhá podkapitola se zaměřuje na analýzu a vývoj postav Liz Headlandové, Alix Bowenové, Esther Breuerové a Shirley Harperové z románů Margarety Drabbleové. Třetí podkapitola srovnává všechny zmíněné protagonistky a zaměřuje se na jejich podobnosti a odlišnosti. Poslední část pak srovnává styl a způsob, jakým Byattová a Drabbleová vykreslují své hrdinky.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the analysis and development of the major female characters in the novels The Virgin in the Garden (1978) and Still Life (1985) by A. S. Byatt and The Radiant Way (1987) and A Natural Curiosity (1989) by Margaret Drabble. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first part is conceived as theoretical and it discusses the role of a literary character within a literary work as well as it touches upon the issue of feminism. There is a brief introduction to the history of feminist movement and also a subchapter focusing on the authors – whether they consider themselves feminist writers or if there are at least some feminist features in their novels. The second part of the thesis deals with the lives of the authors and it also contains the plot summaries of all four novels. The last part analyzes the major female characters and their development in the course of the novels. This part is divided into four subchapters. The first subchapter discusses Frederica and Stephanie Potter from Byatt’s novels; the second focuses on Drabble’s heroines – Liz Headland, Alix Bowen, Esther Breuer and Shirley Harper. The third subchapter compares all the protagonists and finally, the last section compares Byatt and Drabble’s style of portraying the female characters.
