Narrative Strategies in Selected Sherlock Holmes Stories

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá rozdíly ve vyprávěcích strategiích ve dvou povídkách o Sherlocku Holmesovi. V první části práce jsou popsány různé druhy vypravěčů a způsoby, jakými lze zaznamenat myšlenky postav, tedy např. přímá a nepřímá řeč, vnitřní monolog, apod. Tato část také obsahuje krátké shrnutí historického pozadí detektivní fikce se zvláštním zaměřením na změny ve způsobech vyprávění. Druhá část této práce se zabývá hledáním příkladů popsaných jevů v povídkách "Strakatý pás" a "Mazarinův drahokam" a vysvětlením nalezených rozdílů.

Abstract:

This paper focuses on the differences in narrative strategies in two short stories about Sherlock Holmes. In the first part of the paper, the descriptions of different kinds of narrators and ways of expressing characters' thoughts, i.e. for example direct and indirect speech, interior monologue, etc. are provided, as well as a brief summary of the historical background of detective fiction with focus on the changes in narrative style. The second part of this paper deals with finding examples of the described phenomena in "The Speckled Band" and "The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone" and explaining the observed differences between the two stories.
