Práce pojednává o literární postavě doktora Fausta. Téma zaprodání lidské duše, které se k ní váže, je popisováno a srovnáváno v rámci čtyř století. Podrobně jsou zde zkoumána díla tří autorů - Spies, Marlowe, Goethe - a jejich vyznění je vysvětleno skrze myšlenkové a náboženské proudy daných epoch.
