Modification of men's and women's reports of their emotional intelligence based on priming of gender stereotypes

Abstract:

This study is an experimental investigation of the effect of priming gender stereotypes on four individual factors of emotional intelligence according to the trait model of EI (Petrides & Furnham, 2001) as assessed by the TEIQue - SF questionnaire in participants, to improve understanding of the impact of subtle gender priming questions in psychological tests. We hypothesized that participants exposed to gender priming would activate gender-related stereotypes and, as a result, would respond more in line with those stereotypes than participants not exposed to priming. We expected significantly different values on the individual factors of emotionality, sociability, well-being, and self-control; as well as on the total EI score consistent with gender stereotypes of emotional intelligence compared to the control group. The results show that women exposed to priming scored lower on the factor emotionality than women in the control group, suggesting that external factors, such as priming, may influence women's perception and expression of emotionality. In men, we observed a slight increase in the sociability factor after exposure to priming. This study lays the groundwork for further investigation of the impact of gender priming on emotional intelligence.

Abstract:

Táto štúdia sa zaoberá experimentálnym skúmaním účinku primingu rodových stereotypov na štyri jednotlivé faktory emocionálnej inteligencie podľa črtového modelu EI (Petrides & Furnham, 2001) hodnotenú dotazníkom TEIQue – SF u participantov, s cieľom zlepšiť pochopenie vplyvu otázky zameranej na pohlavie participanta v psychologických testoch. Predpokladali sme, že u participantov, vystavených rodovému primingu budú aktivizované stereotypy spojené s gendrom a na základe toho budú odpovedať viac v súlade s danými stereotypmi ako participanti nevystavení primingu. Očakávali sme významne odlišné hodnoty v jednotlivých faktoroch, ktoré sú emocionalita, sociabilita, well-being a seba kontrola; ako aj v celkovom skóre EI v súlade z rodovými stereotypmi o emocionálnej inteligencii v porovnaní s kontrolnou skupinou. Z výsledkov je patrné, že ženy, ktoré boli primingu vystavené, dosiahli nižšie skóre na škále emocionality ako ženy v kontrolnej skupine, čo naznačuje, že vonkajšie faktory, ako napríklad priming, môžu ovplyvniť vnímanie a vyjadrovanie emocionality u žien. U mužov sme po vystavení primingu pozorovali mierne zvýšenie vo faktore sociability, čo môže značiť zmenu v kultúrnych stereotypoch. Táto štúdia pokladá základy pre ďalšie skúmanie vplyvu rodového primingu na emocionálnu inteligenciu.
