Impact of foreign visits of politicians on trade relations

Abstract:

Economic diplomacy, among other things, pays attention to the promotion of international trade, the inflow of foreign investment. In this thesis I analyze how the foreign visits of Slovak politicians affect foreign trade and foreign direct investments using the gravits model of foreign trade and regression methods pooled OLS and the model with fixed effects. The tested model consists of 26 observed countries to which foreign visits aimed in the period from 2001 to 2019. The results of the models showed a positive impact of foreign visits in the case of exports, imports and FDI, and I also managed to prove the longer-term nature of this impact for all three of the variables.

Abstract:

Ekonomická diplomacia, okrem iného, venuje pozornosť aj podpore medzinárodného obchodu, prílevu zahraničných investícií. V tejto práci analyzujem ako vplývajú zahraničné cesty politikov Slovenskej republiky na zahraničný obchod a priame zahraničné investície pomocou gravitačného modelu zahraničného obchodu a regresných metód pooled OLS a modelu s fixnými efektmi. Testovaný model je zložený z pozorovaní 26 krajín do ktorých smerovali zahraničné cesty politikov v období rokov 2001 až 2019. Výsledky modelov preukázali pozitívny vplyv zahraničných ciest v prípade exportu, importu aj PZI a u všetkých troch sa podarilo preukázať aj dlhodobejší charakter tohto vplyvu.
