This bachelor's thesis deals with the novels The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot and Sister Carrie by Theodore Dreiser with aim to compare their two heroines, who have different approaches to their own past and roots. Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá romány Červený mlýn George Eliota a Sestřička Carrie Theodora Dreisera s cílem porovnat hlavní hrdinky, které mají rozdílné přístupy ke své minulosti a kořenům. Tato práce představuje podrobnou analýzu vybraných děl, která je založena na kořenech hrdinek a snaží se porovnat anglickou a americkou kulturu a jejich vliv na hodnoty jednotlivých postav.
