Selected Aspects of Style of Discussions on Social Webs with Regard to Generational Differences among Their Participants

Abstract:

Předkládaná práce se zabývá vybranými aspekty stylu internetových diskuzí, zaměřuje se přitom na vliv odlišné generační příslušnosti účastníků diskuzí na komunikační, tedy i stylizační proces. Předmětem zkoumání jsou tři diskuze tří generací – diskuze mládeže, mladých žen a seniorek. Analýza potvrdila předpoklad, že zástupkyně nejstarší generace mají nejsilnější sklon k dodržování norem tradičně kladených na veřejné psané texty. Projevuje se to zejména v tendenci ke spisovnosti, vyhýbání se dysfemismům, tabuovým tématům a konfliktnímu jednání. Podobné vlastnosti vykazuje i styl diskuze mládeže, což je ovšem dáno především působením správců diskuze, kteří regulují komunikační chování diskutujících. Styl diskuze mladých žen oproti stylu srovnávaných diskuzí vykazuje rysy vyjadřovací volnosti, např. vyšší zastoupení nespisovných prvků a pejorativních lexémů, včetně vulgarismů, výskyt společensky problematických témat nebo tendenci ke kompetitivnímu chování. I přes zjištěné rozdíly lze ve stylech všech zkoumaných diskuzí pozorovat působení faktorů psanosti a veřejnosti nebo tendenci ke kooperativnímu jednání.

Abstract:

This dissertation deals with selected aspects of style of internet discussions, focusing on the influence of generational differences among participants of discussions upon the process of communication, including the process of stylization. Discussions of members of three generations are the research subject here – namely the youth, young ladies and senior ladies. The analysis has confirmed the hypothesis that members of the oldest generation have the strongest tendencies towards adhering to traditional rules of public written texts, such as the tendency to use the standard form of language, to avoid dysphemisms, taboo subjects and conflicts in communication. Similar features can be found in discussions of the youth, this is, however, caused especially by the interference of discussion managers, who regulate the behaviour of participants of discussions. The style of discussions of young ladies is, on the other hand, more liberal, with tendencies towards more frequent use of substandard elements and pejorative words, including vulgarisms, the occurrence of socially problematic topics or a tendency towards competitive behaviour. Despite all those differences, it is possible to conclude that the influence of factors characteristic of public and written communication as well as the tendency towards cooperative behaviour can be found in style of all analyzed discussions.
