Translation of Written Text in Films

Abstract:

Cílem mé diplomové práce bylo prozkoumat metody překladu používané ve filmu, konkrétně metody překladu psaného textu, který se ve filmech často vyskytuje. Psaným textem jsou myšleny například názvy novinových článků, dopisy, různá upozornění, nápisy, názvy knih apod. Diplomová práce obsahuje také stručný přehled historie filmu a historie překladu filmu a zabývá se obecnými metodami překladu ve filmu – především dabingem a titulky. Pro praktickou analýzu byl vytvořen korpus 18 filmů různých žánrů určených pro dospělé a děti/mladistvé, a to jak americké, tak britské produkce. Vytvořený korpus jsem využila k analýze překladu psaného textu v dabovaných i titulkovaných verzí jednotlivých zvolených filmů.

Abstract:

In my thesis I have focused on translation in film, especially on translation of written text items (i.e. letters, newspaper headers, banners, notices, place names etc.). I have provided a brief overview of history of film and about history of film translation. I have also dealt with the methods of translation generally – dubbing and subtitling. I have created a corpus of 18 films, both intended for adults and for children or teenagers, both of American and British production. I have used the corpora to analyse strategies used for translation of written text items in the dubbed and subtitled versions of all the films chosen for the analysis.
