Postmaterialism and Its Influence on Political Behavior in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on Ronald Inglehart’s theory of value change in advanced societies. In the early 1970s Inglehart presented the silent revolution theory, which claims that there has been a rise of postmaterialist values in advanced postindustrial societies after the World War II, caused by a long period of peace and economic growth. Postmaterialism focuses on individual self-expression, promoting rights of minorities, protection of the environment and improving the quality of life. According to Inglehart postmaterialists are more active in politics than materialists, but they participate in a different manner. Materialists prefer conventional activities (e.g. voting and membership in a political party), which Inglehart labels as elite-directed activities. On the other hand, postmaterialists prefer elite-directing activities (political protest activities, e.g. signing petition or taking a part in demonstrations). This thesis analyzes the data from social surveys conducted in the Czech Republic in the light of Inglehart’s theory. The thesis will analyze the development of value priorities in the Czech Republic during the past 20 years, it will analyze the differences in value priorities among age cohorts and finally the impact of postmaterialism on political behavior (on voting as a elite-directed participation as well as protest activities) will be analyzed.

Abstract:

Táto práca sa zaoberá teóriou Ronalda Ingleharta o hodnotovej zmene vo vyspelých spoločnostiach. Inglehart na začiatku 70. rokov predstavil svoju teóriu tichej revolúcie, podľa ktorej dochádza po druhej svetovej vojne vo vyspelých postindustriálnych spoločnostiach vďaka obdobiu mieru a ekonomického rastu k vzostupu postmaterialistických hodnôt, zameraných na sebavyjadrenie, presadzovanie práv menšín, ochranu životného prostredia a zabezpečenie kvality života. Podľa Ingleharta sú postmaterialisti politicky aktívnejší než materialisti, ale preferujú iné spôsoby politickej participácie. Na rozdiel od materialistov, ktorí využívajú hlavne konvenčné spôsoby participácie (Inglehartom označované ako participácia riadená elitami), napr. členstvo v politickej strane a účasť vo voľbách, postmaterialisti preferujú aktivity participácie zameranej na riadenie elít, kam Inglehart zaraďuje protestné aktivity, ako napr. podpisovanie petícií či účasť na demonštráciách. Cieľom tejto práce je skúmať platnosť Inglehartovej teórie na dátach z výskumov, uskutočnených v Českej republike. Bude skúmaný vývoj hodnotových orientácií za posledných 20 rokov, rozdiely v hodnotových orientáciách medzi jednotlivými kohortami a bude skúmaný vplyv postmaterializmu na politické správanie v ČR, ako na konvenčnú participáciu, reprezentovanú účasťou vo voľbách, tak i protestné aktivity.
