Reflexion on the Paul Is Dead Hoax from from the Point of View of The Beatles Fandom

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá fenoménem PID (Paul Is Dead), tedy přesvědčení některých lidí, že Paul McCartney, člen legendární skupiny Beatles, zamřel při autonehodě roku 1966 a byl nahrazen identickým dvojníkem. Práce se tomuto fenoménu věnuje v kontextu populární kultury z pohledu Beatles fandomu. Jejím cílem je tento jev zmapovat napříč historií od šedesátých let do dnešní doby a pokusit se odpovědět na otázku, proč vlastně tyto fenomény uvnitř fandomů vznikají a co jim dodává sílu. V práci jsou diskutována témata jako konspirační teorie, psychologie davu, kult celebrity, fenomén dvojnictví, či fanouškovská mánie, která s fenoménem PID bezprostředně souvisí. Rozebírá tak vznik fenoménu PID a jeho rozšíření za pomocí tisku a zejména potom Beatlemánie, díky kterým se roku 1969 stal fenoménem globálním. Důraz je kladen na samotné stoupence této teorie a jejich počínání, zejména potom jejich analýzu hudby skupiny Beatles a jejich chování na internetu. Práce se takto snaží zaplnit nedostatek literatury na téma konspiračních teorií v populární kultuře pomocí hledání kontextů v oblasti psychologie, sociologie a studia fanouškovských kultur.

Abstract:

This thesis is dealing with the PID (Paul Is Dead) phenomenon, which is a term that describes the belief of some people that Paul McCartney of The Beatles died in a car accident in 1966 and was replaced by a double. This thesis focuses in this phenomenon in the context of popular culture from the point of view of The Beatles fandom. Its goal is to map it throughout the history and answer the question why these phenomena occur and what enhances them. Topics like conspiracy theories, crowd psychology, cult of celebrity, the doppleganger phenomenon, and fan manias are discussed in relation to their relevance to the PID phenomenon. This thesis also analyses the origin of the PID phenomenon and its global expansion in 1969 because of the press and mainly Beatlemania. It also focuses on the followers of the PID theory, their patterns of behaviour throughout history and their analysis of the Beatles music, as well as their behaviour on the internet. Thus, this thesis strives to fill in the hole in the literary sources on the topic of conspiracy theories in popular culture by looking for contexts in the area of psychology, sociology and fan culture studies.
