Gender development in preschool children in association with parents‘ gender attitudes and their division of household chores and childcare responsibilities

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo prozkoumat vztah mezi genderovými postoji rodičů, určitými aspekty genderového vývoje dítěte a rozdělením domácích povinností mezi rodiči. Studie se soustředila na předškolní děti a jejich znalosti genderových stereotypů, jejich flexibilitu ohledně genderových rolí a jejich preference budoucího povolání. Výzkumu se zúčastnilo 55 dětí (27 dívek a 28 chlapců) ve věku od 4 do 6 let a jejich 107 rodičů (55 matek a 52 otců) ve věku od 23 do 57 let. Data od rodičů byla získána prostřednictvím dotazníků, děti byly měřeny pomocí Sex Role Learning Index (SERLI). V práci bylo předpokládáno, že tradičnější postoje rodičů mohou mít souvislost s tradičnějším výběrem povolání u dětí, tento vztah však nebyl nalezen. Dále bylo předpokládáno, že děti z rodin, kde si rodiče dělí domácí práce a péče o potomky rovnoměrněji, si budou vybírat méně typické profese pro svůj gender než děti z rodin s tradičním uspořádáním. Ačkoli matky trávily domácími pracemi dvojnásobné množství času než otcové, nebyla zde souvislost s dětskou volbou povolání zjištěna. Současně studie očekávala nalézt rozdíl v genderových postojích mezi muži a ženami a ve volbě budoucích povolání mezi dívkami a chlapci. Podpořen zde byl rozdíl mezi genderovými postoji mužů a žen, muži byli ve svých genderových postojích tradičnější než ženy.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between parental gender attitudes, certain aspects of child’s gender development and the division of household chores and childcare responsibilities among parents. The study focuses on preschool children and their gender-role knowledge, gender roles flexibility and future occupational aspiration. Among participants were 55 children (27 girls and 28 boys) aged 4 to 6 and their 107 parents (55 mothers and 52 fathers) aged 23 to 57. Data obtained from parents was collected through questionnaires and children were measured by Sex Role Learning Index (SERLI). It was expected that more traditional parental attitudes would be related to child’s traditional occupational choices but this relationship was not found. It was also expected that parents who divided division of household chores and childcare evenly would have children who were more likely to choose non-traditional occupations. Although mothers spent twice as much time doing household chores as fathers, the relationship with children occupation aspiration was not found. The study also hypothesized that, in general, girls would report more flexible choices for future occupation then boys and men would hold more traditional gender attitudes than women. The difference between gender attitudes between men and women was supported by the thesis, men were more traditional in their gender attitudes than women.
