Building and art activities of the Benedictine monastery in Rajhrad during the 18th century

Abstract:

Období 18. století bylo z hlediska stavebních a uměleckých projektů jedním z nejaktivnějších v dějinách benediktinského kláštera v Rajhradě. Ve 20. letech 18. století zahájili rajhradští benediktini nákladnou barokní přestavbu klášterního areálu. Probošti v průběhu let iniciovali rovněž četné stavební aktivity na statcích kláštera. Staví, přestavují a upravují se kostely, kaple, rezidence i hospodářské budovy. I přes finanční těžkosti se představeným kláštera daří vybavit nové budovy nábytkem a uměleckými díly. Předkládaná práce se pokouší nabídnout ucelený pohled na stavební a umělecké realizace rajhradského kláštera. Pozornost je věnována vzniku, úloze a percepci staveb a uměleckých děl. Nastíněny jsou rovněž motivace, jež rajhradské probošty k jejich aktivitám vedly.

Abstract:

Considering architectural and art projects the 18th century was one of the most productive eras in the history of Benedictine monastery in Rajhrad. In 1720s, Rajhrad provosts agreed to the expensive Baroque rebuilding of the monastery complex. They initiated numerous construction projects on the estates belonging to the monastery as well. Provosts focused their attention on renovations, adaptations and constructions of the churches, chapels, residences and farm buildings. Despite financial difficulties the monastery faced, Rajhrad Benedictines managed to furnish new building with furniture and works of art. The thesis tries to offer a comprehensive look at the construction and art activities of the monastery. Attention is paid to the question of the function and perception of the buildings and artworks as well as to the motivations of the provosts of Rajhrad monastery.
