Payment Card Industry – A Bilingual Glossary of Terms and the Role of Anglicisms in the Field

Abstract:

Cílem předkládané diplomové práce je vytvoření dvojjazyčného anglicko-českého glosáře odborné terminologie z odvětví platebních karet se zaměřením na roli anglicismů v dané oblasti. První kapitola definuje rozdíly mezi obecným jazykem (LGP), jazykem pro zvláštní účely (LSP) a dále klasifikuje úrovně a uživatele LSP. Následně je čtenářům představeno odvětví platebních karet, základní termíny a relevantní instituce daného odvětví. Dále jsou definovány termíny, koncepty a terminologie. Další kapitola se snaží přiblížit jazykové změny obecně a poté se zaměřuje na jazykové výpůjčky a zmiňuje různé postoje k tomuto tématu. Následně jsou definovány neologismy, anglicismy a jejich základní typologie. Žargon a vliv angličtiny na jazyk jsou diskutovány v další kapitole. Následující kapitola nastiňuje různé druhy překladatelských metod, také s ohledem na překlání neologismů a terminologie, které jsou doplněny praktickými ukázkami z dané oblasti. Práce dále popisuje vytvoření dvojjazyčného glosáře a analýzu dostupných zdrojů. Posledním tématem je analýza role anglicismů v dané oblasti. Tato práce odhalila, že anglická terminologie oblasti platebních karet je mnohem více etablovaná, nežli česká terminologie, která často nabízí buď několik variant překladu, nebo vůbec žádný. Ukázalo se, že v jazyce pro zvláštní účely přímé výpůjčky substituují české ekvivalenty častěji. Jedním z důvodů je statut angličtiny, který funguje jako hlavní komunikační prostředek v tomto odvětví. Další příčinou je konstantní příliv nových anglických termínů a nedostatek jejich včasných oficiálních překladů do češtiny. Posledním argumentem je analytická povaha angličtiny, která umožňuje sdělit informace jednoduchými termíny a efektivně místo dlouhých opisů v češtině. Diplomovou práci uzavírá myšlenka, že za určitých okolností není potřeba termíny překládat za každou cenu, jelikož jazykové výpůjčky jsou přirozeným procesem a v konečném důsledku mohou jazyk obohatit.

Abstract:

The main objective of this thesis was a compilation of a bilingual glossary of terms from the payment card industry with a particular focus on anglicisms and their role in the field. The first chapter introduces the difference between LSP (language for special purpose) and LGP (Language for general purpose) with further classification of users and levels of LSP. In the next section, the subject area of payment card industry and relevant authorities is presented to the readers. Terms, concepts and terminology are defined in the following part. Another chapter attempts to introduce language change as such and then focuses on borrowing and various approaches. Neologisms are defined and anglicisms and their basic typology is presented. Then, jargon and the influence of English on other languages is discussed. Furthermore, various translation methods regarding neologisms and terminology are outlined and supported with practical examples from the given field. The following part describes the process of the bilingual English – Czech glossary compilation and discusses the relevant sources. Finally, the role of anglicisms in the field is analysed. The thesis revealed that the English terminology of the payment card industry is much more established than Czech which is often offering variants of the equivalent or none at all. It appears direct English loans substitute the Czech equivalents in LSP more often. One of the reasons is the status of the English language functioning as the main communication channel in the industry. Another reason is the constant appearance of new English terms reflecting the technology development in the field and the lack of official and timely translations in Czech. Finally, the analytical nature of English language enables to convey information with simple terms and high language efficiency instead of long Czech descriptions. The paper closes with the statement that on some occasions, terms do not need to be translated at all costs, since borrowing is a natural process that may eventually enrich the given language.
