Transhumanism: The idea between science and fiction

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je zodpovědět otázku, zda mohou transhumanistické myšlenky uspět v akademickém prostředí jako začínající vědecký projekt či teorie. Hlavním záměrem je zhodnotit transhumanismus ze tří základních perspektiv. První perspektivou je perspektiva sociální, která popisuje transhumanismus v jeho rozdílných formách z hlediska cílů, politické orientace a náboženského přesvědčení. Tato perspektiva pomáhá rozlišit mezi racionálními a utopickými typy transhumanismu. Druhá perspektiva představuje transhumanismus jako etickou teorii prosazující enhancement člověka prostřednictvím moderních technologií a dovoluje nám zvážit různé morální principy a následky týkající se proměny přirozené podoby člověka. Třetí perspektiva ukazuje transhumanismus jako druh futurologické teorie s kořeny v science fiction a pomáhá analyzovat pozici tohoto typu scénářů v současné vědě.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to answer the question, if the transhumanist thoughts could succeed at scientific field as a starting project or a new theory. The central intention is to evaluate transhumanism from three basic perpectives. The first perspective is the social one, which describes transhumanist movement in its various forms of goals, political and religious orientation. This perspective helps to distinguish among rational types of transhumanism, which could represent some new kind of science, and the utopic ones. The second perspective introduces transhumanism as an ethical theory upholding the human enhancemet through technical means and allows us to consider various moral principles and consequencies regarding changing the human natural form of being. The third perspective shows transhumanism as a type of futurological thinking with its roots in science fiction and helps to analyze the position of this kind of future scenarios in contemporary science.
