The relationship between excessive internet use and executive function deficits in adolescents: the role of emotional dysregulation as a moderator

Anotace:

Tato bakalářská práce prozkoumává vztah mezi excesivním používáním internetu a deficitem exekutivních funkcí u adolescentů. Současná odborná literatura poskytuje málo informací o teoretickém vysvětlení. Z tohoto důvodu tato práce vysvětluje tento vztah prostřednictvím emoční dysregulace coby moderátoru, který zesiluje vztah mezi excesivním používáním internetu a deficitem exekutivních funkcí. Výzkumný vzorek byl tvořen 154 participanty, z nichž většina byly ženy (67,5 %). Excesivní používání internetu bylo měřeno pomocí Škály excesivního používání internetu a emoční dysregulace pomocí Škály potíží v regulaci emocí (zkrácená forma). Exekutivní funkce byly měřeny dvě, a to inhibiční kontrola a pracovní paměť, za pomocí Stroopova testu a Backward Corsi testu. Zjistilo se, že excesivní používání internetu predikuje horší inhibiční kontrolu a pracovní paměť. Předpokládalo se, že participanti s horší emoční dysregulací, budou mít vyšší excesivní používání internetu a horší pracovní paměť a inhibiční kontrolu. Emoční dysregulace neměla na tento vztah žádný vliv. Pro navazující výzkum bude důležitá větší velikost vzorku a zaměření se na konkrétní činnosti prováděné na internetu.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis examines the relationship between Excessive Internet Use and Executive Function deficits in adolescents. Current scholarly literature provides little information on theoretical explanation. For this reason, this thesis explains this relationship through Emotional Dysregulation as a moderator that strengthens the relationship between Excessive Internet Use and Executive Function deficits. The sample consisted of 154 participants, most of whom were women (67.5 %). Excessive Internet Use was measured using the Excessive Internet Use Scale and Emotional Dysregulation using the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (short form). Two Executive Functions were measured, namely Inhibitory Control and Working Memory, using the Stroop Test and the Backward Corsi Test. Excessive Internet Use was found to predict worse Inhibitory Control and Working Memory. It was hypothesized that participants with worse Emotional Dysregulation would have higher Excessive Internet Use and worse Inhibitory Control and Working Memory. Emotion Dysregulation had no effect on this relationship. A larger sample size and a focus on specific activities performed on the Internet will be important for follow-up research.
