Analysis of stance and circumstance adverbials in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Anotace:

Tato bakalářská práce se věnuje problematice dvou kategorií anglických příslovečných určení vyjadřujících postoj, tzv. ‘stance adverbials’ a průvodní okolnosti, tzv. ‘circumstance adverbials’ v románu Harry Potter a vězeň z Azkabanu od J. K. Rowling. Teoretická část zahrnuje obecný popis problematiky příslovečných určení a podrobný popis zkoumaných kategorií příslovečných určení, s důrazem na klasifikaci, formu a sémantiku. Poté je definovánpojem ‘stance’, který se dá do českého jazyka volně přeložit jako postoj. Praktická část vychází z teoretické části a analyzuje výskyt ‘stance adverbials’ a ‘circumstance adverbials’ v analyzovaném románu, a to jak kvalitativně tak kvantitativně. Výsledky ukazují četnost zkoumaných výrazů, jejich sémantické rozdělení a pozici ve větě.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with stance and circumstance adverbials in the novel Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J. K. Rowling. The theoretical part consists of a general description of adverbials and a detailed description of stance and circumstance adverbials, including their classification, semantics and form. There is also a chapter containing the definition of stance. The practical part is strongly based on the theoretical part and consists of quantitative and qualitative analyses of the occurrence of stance and circumstance adverbials in the novel. The results present the overall occurrence of the studied adverbials, their semantic classifications and also the classification based on their position in a sentence.
