Roman Prodigies: A Contribution to Boyer’s Theory of the Transmission of Cultural Ideas

Abstract:

Teorie přenosu kulturních představ Pascala Boyera (označována také jako teorie přenosu minimálně kontraintuitivních představ, MCI teorie) přinesla možná vysvětlení toho, jak se některé kulturní představy šíří. Predikce plynoucí z MCI teorie byly testovány v experimentálně psychologických výzkumech, avšak ve většině případů na evropských a severoamerických participantech. Podle MCI teorie jsou minimálně kontraintuitivní představy lépe zapamatovatelné, než představy bizarní (v novějších studiích označovaných kontraschematické) nebo intuitivní, a v důsledku toho se lépe šíří. Justin L. Barrett (2008a) navrhl schéma kódování a kvantifikace kontraintuitivity představ, které by mělo umožnit preciznější testování predikcí vycházejících z MCI teorie. Tato práce se pokouší ověřit predikce plynoucí z MCI teorie na historickém materiálu, římských prodigiích. Dosavadní MCI výzkum římských prodigií (Lisdorf 2004; Kavanagh 2014) přinesl nejasné výsledky, jednou studií podporující predikce plynoucí z MCI teorie, a druhou tyto predikce nepotvrzující. Tato práce si proto klade za cíl vytvořit databázi římských prodigií, kvantifikovat míru jejich kontraintuitivity, a pomocí statistické analýzy testovat některé z predikcí plynoucích z MCI teorie. Pokouším se objasnit, jakou část analyzovaného materiálu tvoří kontraintuitivní a kontraschematická prodigia, a jakým způsobem je nutné reformovat MCI teorii a Barrettovo schéma, aby bylo možné s nimi pracovat jako s užitečnými nástroji, díky kterým lze vysvětlit některé aspekty lidského chování.

Abstract:

Pascal Boyer’s theory of the transmission of cultural ideas (also known as theory of the transmission of minimally counterintuitive ideas, the MCI theory) attempts to explain the mechanisms that lay behind the transmission of certain ideas within and among cultures. Predictions driven from the MCI theory have been tested experimentally in psychological studies, mostly however on European and North-American participants. According to the MCI theory, minimally counterintuitive ideas are better remembered and recalled than bizarre (in recent studies coined counter-schematic) or intuitive ideas, thus enjoy a transmission advantage. Justin L. Barrett (2008a) designed a counterintuitiveness coding and quantification scheme in order for the MCI theory’s predictions to be tested more precisely. In this thesis I make an attempt to test the predictions driven from the MCI theory on historical material, the Roman prodigies. MCI research of the Roman prodigies up to this point (Lisdorf 2004; Kavanagh 2014) has delivered unclear results, with one study confirming the MCI theory’s predictions, and one not confirming them. The aim of this thesis is to create a database of the Roman prodigies, quantify their counterintuitiveness, and with the use of statistical analysis test some of the predictions driven from the MCI theory. I will attempt to clarify which parts of the analyzed material consist of counterintuitive and counter-schematic prodigies and how the MCI theory and Barrett’s coding scheme should be reformed in order for them to be fruitful tools, that allow the explanation of certain aspects of the human behavior.
