Young people's autonomy: Living back together with parents during the Covid-19 pandemic

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce bylo prozkoumat zkušenosti dislokovaných studentů, kteří se kvůli uzavření vysokých škol během pandemie COVID-19 vrátili ke svým nukleárním rodinám, a zjistit, jak tento návrat ovlivnil jejich subjektivní a objektivní autonomii. Sběr dat probíhal pomocí online dotazníku a výzkumný vzorek tvořili respondenti ve věku 18-27 let (N = 222). Výsledky analýz ukázaly, že psychologická kontrola rodičů souvisí s nižší mírou prožívané autonomie a naopak podpora autonomie souvisí s vyšší mírou prožívané autonomie. Potvrzen byl i negativní vliv stresu na prožívanou autonomii, zatímco vliv úzkosti a deprese nebyl potvrzen. Z mediační analýzy vyplývá, že psychologická kontrola rodičů skrze prožívanou autonomii predikovala u studentů vyšší úroveň deprese a úzkosti, zatímco úroveň stresu nebyla ovlivněna. Celkový vliv podpory autonomie rodičů predikoval u studentů nižší úroveň stresu a v případě podpory matky i nižší úroveň deprese. Výsledky nepřímých a přímých efektů je však nutné interpretovat s opatrností, protože nebyla nalezena podpora pro mediační model jako celek.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis aimed to examine the experience of dislocated university students, who returned to their nuclear families due to the closure of schools during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to find out how this return affected their subjective and objective autonomy. The data were collected through an online survey, and the research sample consisted of respondents aged 18-27 (N = 222). The results of the analysis showed that parental psychological control is related to a lower level of subjective autonomy. On the other hand, parental autonomy support was related to a higher level of subjective autonomy. The negative effect of stress on subjective autonomy was confirmed, while the effect of anxiety and depression was not. The mediation analysis shows that parental psychological control through subjective autonomy predicted a higher level of depression and anxiety among students, while the level of stress was not affected. Parental autonomy support predicted a lower level of stress among students and, in the case of mother support, a lower level of depression. However, the results of indirect and total effects must be interpreted with caution, as no support was found for the mediation model as a whole.
