New Racism in the British Press

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce analyzuje projevy nového rasismu v britském tisku. V teoretické části práce je představena kritická analýza diskursu, z které tato práce vychází. Teoretická část dále zahrnuje koncept nového rasismu a strategie pro reprezentaci jednotlivých osob. Vlastní analýza zkoumá zobrazení imigrantů, uprchlíků a žadatelů o azyl v liberálním tisku, tedy The Guardian, ve srovnání s konzervativním tiskem The Telegraph. Tato analýza poukazuje na prostředky, kterými je dosahováno systematicky negativního zobrazení dané skupiny, a to především v konzervativním tisku.

Abstract:

This thesis analyzes the new racism as manifested in the British quality press. The theoretical section introduces the approach employed by this thesis, i.e. the critical discourse analysis, discusses the concept of new racism and strategies for the representation of an individual. The analysis then compares articles on immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers in liberal press, represented here by the Guardian, and the conservative press, represented by the Telegraph. The analysis points out to the strategies used predominantly by conservative press to construct a negative image of these non-elite social participants.
