Abstract:

Dizertační práce napomáhá porozumění problému, jakou roli hrají digitálních technologie v životě adolescentů a mladých žen, které se potýkají s poruchou příjmu potravy. Výsledky jsou založeny na životních zkušenostech třiceti mladých žen, které se potýkaly s poruchou příjmu potravy a na pohledu třiceti expertů, kteří se specializují na léčbu poruch příjmu potravy. Dizertace představuje dvě publikované kapitoly v knize a tří publikované recenzované články. Hlavní přínos této práce spočívá v obohacení integrovaného teoretického modelu předloženého R. F. Rodgersovou, který zahrnuje tři úrovně interakce: nezúčastněné používání, používání sociálních sítí a používání speciálních sociálních sítí. Model je zaměřen na rizika, se kterými se adolescenti potýkají v online světě: problémy spojené se sociálními médii a používáním internetu, obavy ohledně tělesného vzhledu a poruch příjmu potravy. Dizertační práce obohacuje tento model představením pozitivních aspektů používání internetu adolescenty a mladými ženami s poruchou příjmu potravy na třech již popsaných úrovních interakce. Práce také přidává čtvrtou úroveň modelu: interakce s technologiemi – používání aplikací; představuje komplexní pohled na užívání technologií lidmi s poruchou příjmu potravy a popisuje konkrétní doporučení pro zdravotnické pracovníky, které vychází s obohaceného modelu. Zdá se, že na všech čtyřech úrovních interakce je důležité zvažovat aktuální motivaci uživatelů. Lidé s poruchou příjmu potravy mohou využívat svoji online účast (pasivní i aktivní) na různých platformách buď pro podporu uzdravení a/nebo pro zachování symptomů poruch příjmu potravy. Výsledky této disertační práce ukazují, že zdravotníci by měli brát v úvahu charakter online aktivit svých klientů. Proto disertační práce povzbuzuje zdravotnické pracovníky k zamyšlení nad možným významem témat souvisejících s technologiemi v životě jejich klientů a následně jejich důležitosti pro proces léčby. Praktické dopady práce pomáhají odborníkům lépe porozumět online aktivitám svých klientů, sledovat vývoj v oblasti digitálních technologií (např. sociálních sítí, populárních webových stránek a aplikací pro chytré telefony) a zvážit jak potenciální rizika, tak příležitosti jejich využití klienty s poruchami příjmu potravy.

Abstract:

This doctoral thesis helps to understand the role of digital technology usage in the everyday lives of adolescents and young women who suffer eating disorders. The results are based on the lived experiences of 30 young women who suffered eating disorders and the views of 30 health care professionals that specialize in the treatment of eating disorders. The thesis presents two published book chapters and three published peer-reviewed articles. The main contribution of this work is the enrichment of the integrated theoretical model proposed by R.F. Rodgers, which includes three levels of interaction: “non-participatory” use; the use of social platforms; and the use of specific social platforms. The model discusses the risks that adolescents face while online: problems related to social media and internet use; body image concerns; and eating pathologies. This thesis enriches the model through the description of the positive aspects of internet usage by adolescents and young women with eating disorders on the three previously proposed levels of interaction; it adds the proposition of a fourth level of interaction — Interaction with Technologies - Application Usage — to provide the entire complex picture of technology usage by people with eating disorders; and it provides specific recommendations for health care professionals which are based on the enriched model. On all four levels of interaction, the actual motivation of users seems to be important. People with eating disorders could use their online presence (either passively or actively) on different platforms to support the recovery process or/and maintain eating disorder symptomatology. The results of this doctoral thesis indicate that health care professionals need to consider the character of their clients’ online activities. Therefore, this doctoral thesis encourages health care professionals to reflect on the possible importance of technology-related topics in their clients’ lives and, consequently, their importance for the treatment process. The practical implications of the thesis help professionals to better understand the online activities of their clients, to follow developing trends in digital technologies (such as social networking sites, popular websites, and smartphone applications), and to consider both the potential risks and opportunities of their usage by clients with eating disorders.
