Evaluation of ethological observation of piglets

Abstract:

Tato práce je zaměřena na etologii prasete. Je rozdělena na dvě části. Teoretická část popisuje vývoj etologie, metody etologického pozorování, význam chovu prasat, způsob chovu vysokobřezích, rodících a kojících prasnic, fyziologické zvláštnosti novorozených selat a konkrétní etologii prasete, včetně životních projevů a smyslových vlastností. Cílem experimentální části bylo zhodnotit etologická pozorování skupiny šesti selat. Pozorování proběhla pětkrát během období od porodu do odstavu. Metodou skupinových snímků byly zaznamenány životní projevy selat, byl sledován vznik sacího pořádku a na základě agonistického chování byla zjištěna hierarchie ve skupině. Byl zhotoven sociogram, jednotlivé etogramy byly zpracovány do tabulek a grafů a bylo zmapováno vytvoření sacího pořádku. Provedeným experimentem bylo zjištěno, že sele sající z prvního struku vážilo při odstavu pouze 4,1 kg a v hierarchii bylo nejvíce submisivní, zatímco sele nejvíce dominantní a nejtěžší (7,6 kg) sálo ze struku pátého. Hlavním zjištěním tedy je, že ne vždy saje největší sele z prvního struku a nejmenší naopak z posledního.

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on the ethology of the pig. It is divided into two parts. The theoretical part describes the development of ethology, methods of ethological observation, the importance of pig breeding, manner of breeding of high-pregnant, farrowing and lactating sows, physiological distinctions of newborn piglets and specific ethology of pigs, including vital signs and sensory characteristics. The aim of the experimental part was to evaluate the ethological observations of a group of six piglets. Observations have been done five times since the period from birth to weaning. The life-manifestations of piglets were recorded by scan sampling method, the formation of the sucking order was monitored and the group hierarchy was determined on the basis of agonistic behaviour. A sociogram was made, individual ethograms were processed into tables and graphs, and the formation of a sucking order was mapped. In the performed experiment, it was found that the piglet sucking from the first teat weighed only 4.1 kg at weaning and it was the most submissive in the hierarchy, while the piglet most dominant and heaviest (7.6 kg) sucked from the teat number five. The main finding is that the largest pig does not always suck from the first teat neither the smallest one from the last.
