Theoretical and practical aspects of price bubbles and their application to the Dot-com bubble

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá cenovými bublinami. Nejdříve představuje různé teorie týkající se vzniku cenových bublin, následně je sledován průběh, kdy jsou popsány jednotlivé fáze cenové bubliny. Posléze se práce zaobírá dopady způsobené tvorbou a prasknutím cenových bublin. Dále se práce věnuje metodám identifikace cenových bublin, důraz je však kladen zejména na trendové křivky a poměrové ukazatele. Cílem práce je aplikace těchto teoretických poznatků na konkrétní Dot-com bublinu, která je obsažena v poslední části práce. Je zjištěno, že nejlépe z představených metod identifikace dokázalo přítomnost cenové bubliny odhalit P/E ratio. Dle ostatních metod pak nebylo možno jednoznačně rozhodnout či v identifikaci selhaly.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with price bubbles. First, it presents various theories regarding the emergence of price bubbles, then it describes the course of the bubble and each phase of the bubble. Afterwards, the thesis deals with the effects caused by the creation and bursting of price bubbles. Furthermore, the thesis depicts the methods of identifying price bubbles and the emphasis is put on trend curves and ratio indicators. The goal of the thesis is the application of these theoretical findings to a specific Dot-com bubble, which takes place in the last part of thesis. It is found that the P/E ratio was the best of the presented identification methods to detect the presence of a price bubble. According to the other methods, it was not possible to clearly decide, or they failed in identification of the bubble.
