Ecophysiological response of Norway spruce and sessile oak saplings to stress conditions

EKOFYZIOLOGICKÁ REAKCE SAZENICE SMRKU A DUBU VE STRESOVÝCH PODMÍNKÁCH

Anotace:

Zvyšující se koncentrace oxidu uhličitého v atmosféře (CO2) a měnící se dostupnost vody v důsledku změny klimatu představují významné výzvy pro lesní ekosystémy. Výzkum klíčových druhů, jako je dub zimní (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.) a smrk ztepilý (Picea abies (L.) H. Karst.), poskytl cenné poznatky o tom, jak tyto faktory ovlivňují růst stromů, využití vody a fyziologické adaptace. V naší studii bylo během tříletého období pěstováno 288 sazenic dubu zimního ve skleněných lamelových sférách za různých koncentrací CO2 a podmínek přísunu živin. Zvýšené koncentrace CO2 vedly k nárůstu biomasy nadzemních i podzemních částí sazenic dubu zimního o 44,3 % a 46,9 %. Hustota dřeva však klesla přibližně o 1,7 %. Tento růst byl podpořen strukturálními změnami ve dřevě, včetně širších letokruhů a větších cév, které zlepšují hydraulickou vodivost. I přes větší velikost cév byl jejich počet pod vlivem eCO2 výrazně snížen. Přísun živin významně neovlivnil růst biomasy ani strukturu dřeva, s výjimkou snížení specifické listové plochy. Tyto výsledky naznačují, že zatímco eCO2 podporuje produkci biomasy, snížená hustota dřeva, která ovlivňuje mechanickou pevnost, spolu se zvýšenou zranitelností xylému vůči suchu, může vést k dřívějšímu úhynu stromů, což by mohlo kompenzovat pozitivní účinky eCO2. V rámci druhé studie byly zkoumány účinky zvýšeného CO2 (eCO2) na účinnost využití vody (WUE) u sazenic smrku ztepilého, s důrazem na dostupnost půdní vláhy. Výsledky ukazují, že vlhčí letní podmínky v roce 2020 zlepšily zadržování půdní vlhkosti při eCO2, což je zásadní pro zdraví stromů během období nízkých srážek. Míra transpirace vykazovala minimální rozdíly mezi jednotlivými úrovněmi CO2. Byl zjištěn významný statisticky větší přírůst na kruhové ploše kmene sazenic při eCO2. Výrazné bylo, že eCO2 zesílil transpiraci v reakci na rostoucí VPDD při vyšších úrovních vlhkosti, zatímco tento efekt se snižoval při omezujících podmínkách půdní vlhkosti. Výsledky odhalily negativní korelaci mezi VPDD a WUEBAI, přičemž s rostoucím SWC docházelo ke snížení WUEBAI. Ačkoli hlavní efekt eCO2 na WUEBAI nebyl statisticky významný, významné interakce zahrnující VPDD a SWC poukazují na složitost těchto vztahů, což přináší nové poznatky o fyziologických reakcích stromů na změny prostředí. Byl také hodnocen vliv redukce koruny o 50 % (CR) na sazenice smrku ztepilého a dubu zimního za podmínek sucha. Pomocí automatických dendrometrů byl sledován růst a změny související s vodním režimem u 24 sazenic každého druhu. CR zlepšil dostupnost půdní vody a snížil TWD u sazenic smrku ztepilého (p < 0,05), ale došlo ke zhoršení vodního stavu kmene u sazenic dubu zimního. CR také vedlo k nárůstu počtu růstových dnů u smrku ztepilého ve srovnání s dubem zimním. Tyto výsledky naznačují, že CR může být vhodnou strategií ke zmírnění stresu způsobeného suchem u smrku ztepilého, ačkoli je zapotřebí dalšího testování v terénu k potvrzení těchto zjištění. Prezentované výsledky zdůrazňují vliv eCO2 na klíčové druhy stromů ve střední Evropě, přičemž upozorňují na výhody růstu i potenciální rizika spojená s vodním stresem. Navíc se ukazuje, že nástroje, jako je CR, jsou účinné při zmírňování vodního stresu a podpoře růstu stromů, zejména u smrku ztepilého. Porozumění této problematice je zásadní pro predikci vitality lesů a vývoj účinných ochranářských opatření v kontextu probíhající změny klimatu, a tím zajištění udržitelnosti klíčových lesních ekosystémů. This study investigates the effects of elevated (eCO2) on the water use efficiency (WUE) of Norway spruce saplings, highlighting the critical role of soil water availability. Results indicate that wetter summer conditions in 2020 enhanced soil moisture retention under eCO2, which is vital for tree health during periods of low rainfall. Transpiration rates showed minimal variation between CO2 treatments. We observed significantly higher growth of basal area under eCO2. Notably, eCO2 amplified transpiration responses to increasing VPDD at higher moisture levels, while this effect diminished under water-limited conditions. The findings reveal a negative correlation between VPDD and WUEBAI, with higher SWC correlating with reduced WUEBAI. Although the primary effect of eCO2 on WUEBAI was not statistically significant, significant interactions involving VPDD and SWC underscore the complexity of these relationships, offering insights into tree physiological responses to environmental changes. The impact of 50% crown reduction (CR) on Norway spruce and sessile oak saplings under drought conditions was assessed. Using automatic dendrometers, growth and water-related changes were monitored in 24 saplings per species. CR improved soil water availability and TWD in Norway spruce saplings (p < 0.05) but resulted in reduced stem water status in sessile oak saplings. CR also increased the number of growing days for Norway spruce compared to sessile oak. These results suggest that CR may be a beneficial strategy for alleviating drought stress in Norway spruce, although further field testing is needed to validate these findings. The presented results underscore the impact of eCO2 on key tree species in Central Europe, highlighting both growth benefits and potential risks associated with water stress. Additionally, mitigation tools such as CR have proven effective in alleviating water stress and supporting tree growth, particularly for Norway spruce. Understanding these issues is crucial for forecasting forest health and developing effective conservation measures in the context of ongoing climate change, thereby ensuring the sustainability of essential forest ecosystems. Presented results highlighted the species-specific response underscores the need for targeted forest management practices to address the varying impacts of water stress on different tree species.

Abstract:

The increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and changing water availability due to climate change present significant challenges for forest ecosystems. Research on key species such as sessile oak (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl and Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) H. Karst.) has provided insights into how these factors influence tree growth, water use, and physiological adaptations. In our study, over three years 288 two-year-old sessile oak saplings were grown in lamellar glass domes under different CO2 concentrations and nutrient conditions. Elevated CO2 resulted in a 44.3% increase in both above- and below-ground biomass in sessile oak saplings, with increases of 44.3% and 46.9%, respectively However, wood density decreased by approximately 1.7%. This growth was supported by structural changes in the wood, including wider growth rings and larger conduits that improve hydraulic conductance. Despite the larger vessel size, their number was significantly reduced under eCO2. Nutrient supply did not significantly impact biomass growth or wood structure, except for a decrease in specific leaf area. These findings suggest while eCO2 enhances biomass production, the effect of lower density on mechanical strength, coupled with the increased vulnerability of the xylem to drought, may lead to earlier mortality, potentially offsetting the positive effects of eCO2.
