The Influence of Appearance on Electoral Success

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá vyhodnocením vlivu vzhledu na úspěšnost ve volbách do Senátu České republiky v roce 2022. Vzhled kandidátů a jejich atraktivita se staly předmětem zájmu ve volebních studiích z důvodu jejich potenciálního vlivu na volební výsledky a politický úspěch. Porozumění této problematice v ČR může poskytnout poznatky o chování voličů a faktorech ovlivňujících jejich rozhodování, což může mít význam pro politické aktéry, a volební strategie. Cílem práce je určit, zda má vzhled kandidátů měřený pomocí symetrie obličeje vliv na úspěšnost u vybraných voleb. Dílčím cílem práce je zhodnocení vlivu dalších faktorů jako věk, pohlaví, vzdělání, nebo předchozí funkce v Parlamentu ČR. Dále také bylo zkoumáno, zda mají úspěšnější strany ve svých řadách atraktivnější kandidáty a zda má atraktivita kandidátů vliv na volební účast ve zkoumaných volebních obvodech. Na datech z Českého statistického úřadu a datech o symetrii obličeje kandidátů byla provedena regresní analýza, Spearmanův korelační test, Mann-Whitneyho test a Kruskal-Wallisův test. Bylo prokázáno, že vzhled má vliv na volební úspěšnost, avšak následně bylo zjištěno, že tento vliv je statisticky významný pouze u mužů. Dále bylo zjištěno, že vliv na volební úspěšnost má také předchozí funkce v Parlamentu ČR. Nebylo prokázáno, že by úspěšnější strany měly ve svých řadách atraktivnější politiky. Vliv vzhledu kandidátů na volební účast ve zkoumaných volebních obvodech nebyl potvrzen. Na základě získaných výsledků byly identifikovány možné oblasti pro budoucí výzkum a formulovány doporučení pro politické kandidáty a strany.

Abstract:

This paper evaluates the impact of appearance on success in the 2022 Czech Senate elections. Candidates' appearance and attractiveness have become a topic of interest in electoral studies because of their potential impact on electoral outcomes and political success. Understanding these dynamics in the Czech Republic can provide insights into voter behaviour and the factors influencing their decision-making, which may be relevant for political actors, and electoral strategies. The aim of this paper is to determine whether candidate appearance, as measured by facial symmetry, has an effect on success in selected elections. A sub-objective of the thesis is to assess the influence of other factors such as age, gender, education, or previous positions in the Parliament. It was also examined whether the more successful parties have more attractive candidates in their ranks and whether the attractiveness of candidates has an impact on the attendance in the constituencies studied. Regression analysis, Spearman's correlation test, Mann-Whitney test and Kruskal-Wallis test were performed on data from the Czech Statistical Office and data on the facial symmetry of candidates. Appearance was shown to have an effect on electoral success, but this effect was subsequently found to be statistically significant only for men. It was also found that previous positions in Parliament also have an impact on electoral success. More successful parties were not found to have more attractive politicians in their ranks. The effect of candidates' appearance on turnout in the constituencies studied was not confirmed. Based on the results obtained, possible areas for future research were identified and recommendations for political candidates and parties were formulated.
