Motherhood and Its Impact on Women's Labor Market Participation in the Czech Republic in 2012–2022

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce si klade za cíl analyzovat vliv mateřství na participaci žen na trhu práce v České republice v období 2012–2022 a ověřit hypotézu, že načasování mateřství je značně ovlivněno socioekonomickými faktory, jako jsou akademické cíle, finanční stabilita a kariérní ambice. Tyto faktory mají za následek odklad mateřství žen do pozdějšího věku a vedou rodiny k preferenci nižšího počtu dětí. Teoretická část práce se za použití literární rešerše zaměřuje na koncept rodiny a mateřství, historický vývoj a současnou rodinnou politiku v České republice. Dále se teoretická část práce zabývá vybranými teoretickými přístupy k postavení žen na trhu práce, jako je například teorie lidského kapitálu či teorie diskriminace. Závěrem se teoretická část práce zaměřuje na samotný trh práce, jeho charakteristiku s ohledem na postavení žen na trhu práce a flexibilní formy, které umožňují ženám sladit pracovní a rodinný život. Praktická část práce se zaměřuje na demografický vývoj a nástroje rodinné politiky zaměřené na peněžitou pomoc v mateřství, rodičovský příspěvek a předškolní péči. Následně je praktická část práce zaměřena na analýzu vývoje participace žen na trhu práce v období 2012–2022. Z provedené analýzy vyplynulo, že rodičovský příspěvek představuje klíčový nástroj rodinné politiky, avšak jeho hodnota neodráží vliv inflace a rostoucí životní náklady. Analýza trhu práce zároveň ukázala, že ženy čelí určitému znevýhodnění, zejména pak v podobě nižších mezd, nižší zaměstnanosti a omezených příležití, což negativně ovlivňuje jejich postavení na trhu práce. Součástí výzkumu bylo také dotazníkové šetření, které zkoumalo faktory ovlivňující rozhodování matek o načasování mateřství. Výsledky šetření a následné provedení analýzy ukazují, že finanční stabilita, kariérní ambice a akademické cíle nejsou významnými faktory při rozhodování o načasování mateřství. Na základě těchto zjištění lze stanovenou hypotézu vyvrátit.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis aims to analyze the influence of motherhood on women’s participation in the labor market in the Czech Republic during the period from 2012 to 2022. It also seeks to verify the hypothesis that the timing of motherhood is significantly influenced by socio-economic factors such as academic aspirations, financial stability, and career ambitions. These factors lead to the postponement of motherhood to a later age and result in families opting for fewer children. The theoretical part of the thesis, supported by a literature review, focuses on the concept of family and motherhood, the historical development of family structures, and current family policies in the Czech Republic. It further examines selected theoretical approaches to women’s status in the labor market, including human capital theory and theories of discrimination. Lastly, the theoretical section addresses the characteristics of the labor market with respect to women’s standing and explores flexible employment forms that allow women to balance work and family life. The practical part of the thesis centers on demographic trends and family policy instruments related to maternity benefits, parental allowances, and preschool care. Subsequently, it analyzes the evolution of women’s labor market participation between 2012 and 2022. The analysis indicates that the parental allowance is a key family policy tool, yet its value fails to reflect the impact of inflation and rising living costs. Concurrently, the labor market analysis reveals that women face certain disadvantages, notably lower wages, reduced employment opportunities, and limited prospects, which collectively undermine their position in the labor market. The research also included a questionnaire survey investigating factors that influence mothers’ decisions about the timing of motherhood. The results and subsequent analysis show that financial stability, career ambitions, and academic goals are not significant factors in determining when to have children. Based on these findings, the stated hypothesis can be rejected.
