Ethnocentrism Illustrated - Comic Analysis

Abstract:

Tato práce analyzuje zobrazování kulturních stereotypů v Tintinovi v Kongu (1930), jednoho z alb slavného belgického komiksu Tintin. Nejdříve je definován žánr komiksu a následně je uvedeno historické pozadí Tintinova vzniku. Analýza rozebírá konkrétní situace interakcí jednotlivých komiksových postav, a pokouší se upozornit na, často implicitní, autorův etnocentrizmus. Tintin v Kongu vzniká v době belgického kolonializmu, který se do zobrazovaného výrazně otiskuje. Na jedné straně příběh glorifikuje úlohu kolonizujících. Domorodé obyvatelstvo je na druhé straně zobrazováno jako neschopné, ustrašené, hloupé a bez jakékoliv vlastní invence. Analýza ústí v diagram, který jednotlivé stereotypy postav sumarizuje a třídí. Ačkoliv Tintin vyšel před 75 let, je stále vydáván a úspěšně prodáván. Jeho velká čtenářská obliba ukazuje na to, že je součást dnešní kultury.

Abstract:

My thesis analyzes the representation of cultural stereotypes in Tintin in the Kongo (1930), a book from the famous Belgian comic series Tintin. After defining comics as a genre, I proceed to describe Tintin s historical background. By analyzing the interaction of various comics characters in specific situations, I try to point out the author s – often implicit – ethnocentrism. Tintin in the Kongo was created during Belgian colonialism, which strongly influences its representations. It glorifies the role of the colonizer, while portraying the indigenous population as inept, timid, dumb, and lacking all invention. The analysis culminates in a diagram that summarizes and classifies various stereotypes. Although Tintin was created 75 years ago, the comics are still being published and sell well. Tintin s sizeable readership shows that he is part of today s culture
