Social and Political Implications of Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution

Abstract:

Evoluční teorie Charlese Darwina patří bez pochyby mezi nejzásadnější pilíře (nejen) západního myšlení. Existují dokonce hlasy, že snad s výjimkou Písma svatého se ještě žádnému textu, ať už vědeckému, akademickému či beletristickému, nepodařilo vyvolat tak rozporuplné reakce jako Darwinově O vzniku druhů přírodním vývojem. Předkládaná bakalářská práce se ve své první části, tj. kapitolách 1 a 2, zabývá obecně otázkou proč tomu tak je. Autor tvrdí, že ačkoliv evoluční teorie bezpochyby představuje zpochybnění tradičního křesťanského pojetí vzniku světa, v žádném případě, minimálně ne explicitně, nezpochybňuje existence Boha či víru v něj. Naopak druhá část bakalářské práce, tj. kapitoly Eugenics, Social Darwinism a Scientific Racism, se zabývá zejména vztahem mezi Darwinem a jeho evoluční teorií a dalšími sociopolitickými či kulturními koncepty, např. výše zmíněný sociální Darwinismus, eugenika či vědecký rasismus. Autor práce zastává názor, že je nepřesné až nepřípustné považovat Darwina za zastánce či dokonce autora takových teorií, v jejichž centru stojí rasismus či které hlásají nenávist vůči určitým sociálním či etnickým skupinám. Hlavním úkolem celé bakalářské práce je poukázat na to, jak často je evoluční teorie, bohužel často účelně, překrucována a chybně interpretována a že neexistuje žádný objektivní důvod, proč by její odpůrci a zastánci nemohli žít bo po boku.

Abstract:

Charles Darwin's theory of evolution is one of the fundamental concepts that shape virtually every aspect of human thought. Some scholars and critics go as far as saying that perhaps with the exception of the Bible there is no other literary, scientific or scholarly text that stirred so much discussion and controversy as Darwin’s seminal work On the Origin of Species. The major aim of the first part of the thesis, i.e. the first and second chapters, is to investigate, broadly speaking, why it is so. It is argued therein that although the evolution theory questions the Christian interpretation of the origin of the universe as articulated in Genesis, it does not necessarily have to question the existence of God. The second part of the thesis, i.e. the chapters Eugenics, Social Darwinism and Scientific Racism deal with the relationship between evolution theory and Darwin and socio-political concepts that, though generally associated with Darwin and Darwinism, have very little in common with ideas and views expressed by the author of The Origin of Species or The Descent of Man. Darwin is often considered a proponent of eugenicist or racist thought, his theory of evolution being a scientific justification of such behaviour. The bachelor’s thesis endeavours to refute this view, proving that Darwin neither endorsed nor justified the existence of theories whereby humanity is divided into superior and inferior individuals/races or their practical implementations such as forced sterilization, the Holocaust and many others.
