Alignment of economic cycles and sectoral activities of EU countries in the context of the effects of the global economic crisis

Abstract:

Tématem této diplomové práce je posouzení současné sladěnosti a konvergence hospodářských cyklů HDP i odvětvových činností zemí EU v kontextu dopadů světové hospodářské krize. Práce vychází z teoretických východisek teorie optimálních měnových oblastí, Maastrichtských kritérií a teorie hospodářské cyklu. K měření sladěnosti hospodářských cyklů je využito korelační analýzy a indexu cyklické shody. Korelační analýza je používána i při měření konvergence hospodářských cyklů. Přičemž časové řady HDP, indexu produkce ve stavebnictví, v zpracovatelském průmyslu a těžbě a dobývání jsou detrendovány pomocí Hodrick-Prescottova filtru a logaritmické diference prvního řádu. Dosažené výsledky naznačují zvyšování konvergence hospodářských cyklů po světové ekonomické krizi.

Abstract:

The topic of this diploma thesis is to assess the current alignment and convergence of economic GDP and sectoral activities of EU countries in the context of the effects of the global economic crisis. Thesis is based on the theoretical basis of the theory of optimal currency areas, Maastricht criteria and the theory of business cycle. Correlation analysis and the concordance index are used to measure the alignment of business cycles. Correlation analysis is also used to measure the convergence of business cycles. Time series of GDP, the index of production in construction, manufacturing and mining and quarrying are detrended using the Hodrick-Prescott filter and first order logarithmic difference. The results indicate an increase in the convergence of economic cycles after global economic crisis.
