Abstract:

Tato práce se zaměřuje na vyobrazení užívání a uživatelů drog v dílech Huntera S. Thompsona z hlediska žánru, ale také z hlediska událostí a změn, které se udály ve Spojených Státech během období let 1960 a 1970, a které jeho díla reflektují. Práce se snaží dokázat, že i přes svoji negativní konotaci drogy v případě Huntera S. Thompsona pomohly vytvořit dílo, které právě tuto negativní konotaci zpochybňuje Práce je rozdělena do tří částí. Úvodní část poskytuje základní informace týkající se autorova umístění v kontextu dalších spisovatelů, kteří se věnují drogové tematice a také popisuje vliv objevu nejznámější psychedelické substance – LSD. Zároveň komentuje téma alkoholu ve vztahu k autorově tvorbě. Druhá část se z větší části věnuje autorovu životu a jeho postoji k americké společnosti na začátku nové éry, která podle jeho mínění vede k úpadku tradičních hodnot. Práce také zdůrazňuje spojení mezi autorem a postavami jeho děl, protože autorova osobní drogová zkušenost zde slouží jako základ jeho prací, které vyúsťují ve vytvoření jeho jedinečného stylu psaní – gonzo žurnalismu. Poslední kapitola analyzuje Thompsonovo klíčové dílo – Strach a Hnus v Las Vegas z hlediska užívání drog a zdůrazňuje autorovu snahu o odstranění negativní konotace, kterou psychedelické drogy mají. Toho se autor snaží docílit tím, že čtenáři přiblížiuje dočasnost jejich účinků, které mají na lidské vědomí a výhody, které pramení z těchto účinků.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on a depiction of the drug abuse and the users in the works of Hunter S. Thompson from the point of the genre as well as from the point of reflection of events and changes that occurred in United States during the period of 1960’s and 1070’s. The thesis tries to prove, that despite their negative perception, drugs in case of Hunter S. Thompson helped to create a literary work, which deconstructs negative connotation they have. Thesis is divided into three sections. An introductory section provides basic information in regards to the author’s position in context of other authors who in their works use the theme of drugs. It also comments on the impact of discovery of the most famous psychedelic substance – LSD, as well as it comments on the element of alcohol in relation to the author’s work. Second section is mainly dedicated to author’s life and his attitude towards the American society on the brink of new era that, according to author, ushers in breakdown of traditional values. It also tries to point out connection between the author and characters of his work and how author’s personal experience serves as a basis for his works, which results in creation of his own unique writing style – Gonzo Journalism. The final chapter analyzes the Thompson’s key work – Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas from the point of drug abuse and highlights author’s effort to remove negative connotation that psychedelic drugs have by showing temporariness of their effects and benefits that derive from those effects.
