The internet addiction in the contect of anxiety and self-esteem in emerging adulthood

Abstract:

Prevalence závislost na internetu v posledních dvou dekádách roste a to zvlášť u mladých lidí. Tato behaviorální závislost ve své těžké podobě přináší obtíže do každodenního života. V předkládané bakalářské práci byly mapovány možné vztahy závislosti na internetu k prožívané míře úzkosti a self-esteem u jedinců v období vynořující se dospělosti (N = 175, M = 37,1%, Ž = 62,9%) prostřednictvím jednorázového dotazníkového šetření. Pro získání dat bylo využito dotazníků Test závislosti na internetu, Beckův inventář úzkosti a Rosenbergova škála sebehodnocení (self-esteem). Psychometrické charakteristiky používaných metodologických instrumentů byly ověřeny. Kontrolní analýza reliability všech dotazníků byla přijatelná. V daném výzkumu byl nalezen středně silný pozitivní vztah mezi závislostí na internetu a úzkostí (r = 0,405; p < 0,01). Daný výsledek byl statisticky významný. Lze tedy s ohledem na limity předkládaného výzkumu tvrdit, že s rostoucí závislostí na internetu roste i prožívaná míra úzkosti. Druhý předpokládaný vztah mezi závislostí na internetu a self-esteem nebyl statisticky signifikantní (r = 0,008; p > 0,05). Výsledky ukázaly, že se závislost na internetu může vyskytovat v komorbiditě s rostoucí prožívanou mírou úzkosti a proto má daný signifikantní výsledek přesah do aplikační praxe. Poznatky předkládané bakalářské práce slouží jako podklad pro budoucí výzkumy závislosti na internetu.

Abstract:

The global prevalence of internet addiction has been rising throughout the last two decades, especially in young people. This behavioral addiction, in its intense form, brings struggle into the everyday life. The possible relationships of internet addiction to the perceived level of anxiety and self-esteem in individuals of emerging adulthood (N = 175, M = 37,1%, F = 62,9%) were analyzed using a one-off survey in the presented bachelor thesis. To gain the data three questionnaires were used: Internet Addiction Test, Becks Anxiety Inventory and Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale. The psychometric characteristics of used methods were analyzed as well. The control reliability analysis of all used methods was acceptable. A moderate positive relationship between internet addiction and anxiety (r = 0,405; p < 0,01) was found in this study. The given result was statistically significant. When taking the limits of this study into account, it is possible to assume that with the rising of internet addiction, the perceived level of anxiety rises as well. The second hypothesized relationship between internet addiction and self-esteem was not statistically significant (r = 0,008; p > 0,05). The results showed that internet addiction can be comorbid with the rising level of perceived anxiety, therefore the given significant result overlaps into the application practice. The findings of the submitted bachelor thesis serve as a basis for the future studies of internet addiction.
