Representation of the Roma people in the media

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the realisation of the dominant group's power reflected in the discourse of selected British newspapers. The theoretical part aims to explore who the Roma people are as an ethnic minority, how they got to Europe, and how they were accepted by the rest of society, with its primary focus on Roma people living in the United Kingdom and their history, culture, lifestyle together with the discrimination that they face in the UK. The practical part concentrates on analysing the language in the corpus of online articles using Critical Discourse Analysis (Teun van Dijk method), focusing on the language used in the headlines, implications, metaphors, lexical expressions, disclaimers, sentence structure, the concept of voice, and the themes of the articles. This thesis aims to find how the British media, specifically the newspaper discourse, present the Roma people and if the power of the stronger and dominant group is reflected upon them.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá realizací moci silnější skupiny reflektované v diskurzu vybraných britských novin. Záměrem teoretické práce je prozkoumat, kdo jsou to Romové, jakožto etnická menšina, jak se dostali do Evropy a jak byli přijati zbytkem společnosti, s hlavním zaměřením na Romy žijícími ve Spojeném království a jejich historií a přiblížením jejich kultury a životního stylu společně s diskriminací, které čelí. Praktická část se zaměřuje na analýzu jazyka v korpusu online článků přístupem kritické diskurzivní analýzy (metoda Teuna van Dijka), zaměřující se na jazyk v titulkách, implikacích, metaforách, lexikálních výrazech, disclaimers, větné struktuře, komu je dán v článcích prostor se vyjádřit a v tématice článků. Cílem této práce je zjistit, jak britská média, konkrétně novinový diskurz, prezentují Romy a zda-li je vůči nim uplatňována moc silnější většiny.
