Poetics of Jaromil Jireš and Karel Kachyňa: Modernism in Czech cinema and its transformations after the onset of the normalization period

Anotácia:

Diplomová práce navazuje na bakalářskou práci Marketa Lazarová jako modernistický film (2021) a směřuje k formulování modernistické poetiky dvou odlišných a zároveň podobných českých režisérů – Jaromila Jireše a Karla Kachyni. Práce se zaměřuje na jejich celovečerní hrané filmy ve vrcholném období 1962/1963–1969 a bezprostředně na to v začátcích normalizačního období 1969–1973. Práce tvrdí, že u filmů těchto tvůrců lze ve vymezeném období vysledovat několik preferovaných modernistických strategií formulovaných Andrásem Bálintem Kovácsem. Na základě analytické a zčásti i historické poetiky Davida Bordwella práce analyzuje filmovou poetiku tvůrců a rozkrývá, co se z toho lze dozvědět o éře modernismu v české kinematografii. Pro tyto záměry rozebírá modernistické tendence striktně ve vymezeném dvanáctiletí 1962–1973. Práce objasňuje, jak se tyto tendence projevovaly v jejich tvorbě, kdy a jak je tito tvůrci začínali vědomě chápat jako nějakou širší základnu vnějších norem, a jak se jim coby racionálně smýšlející tvůrci na pozadí jednotlivých filmů záměrně přizpůsobovali. Pozornost je přitom směřována stěžejně k naraci, protože to, jak modernistické filmy zprostředkovávají děj vyprávěním, respektive jak tyto filmy vyprávějí, a jak toto vyprávění funguje, je v případě modernistické kinematografie nejdůležitější. Práce z jistých důvodů nenásleduje tradiční a systematický neoformalistický přístup, jak ho popsala Kristin Thompsonová s Davidem Bordwellem, ačkoli se některými jeho nástroji zabývá. Přístup je spíše selektivní, kde je kladen důraz na specifické prvky a techniky, které jsou pro účel popsaní obou poetik a modernismu nejrelevantnější. Nakonec práce nabízí perspektivu pro další rozsáhlý, systematický a konečně i kompletní a ucelený výzkum modernismu v české kinematografii.

Abstract:

The thesis is a continuation of the bachelor thesis Marketa Lazarová as a Modernist Film (2021) and aims to formulate the modernist poetics of two different, yet similar Czech directors – Jaromil Jireš and Karel Kachyňa. The thesis focuses on their feature films in the peak period of 1962/1963–1969 and immediately afterwards in the beginning of the normalization period of 1969–1973. The thesis argues that several preferred modernist strategies formulated by András Bálint Kovács can be traced in the films of these filmmakers in the defined period. Drawing on David Bordwell's analytical and partly historical poetics, the thesis analyses the film poetics of the filmmakers and reveals what can such analysis tell us about modernism in Czech cinema. For these purposes, it analyses modernist tendencies strictly within the defined twelve-year period 1962–1973. The thesis explains how these tendencies manifested themselves in their work, when and how these filmmakers began to consciously understand them as a broader base of external norms, and how, as rationally minded filmmakers, they deliberately conformed to them. Attention here is directed crucially to narrative, because the way the modernist films convey the plot through narrative is paramount in the case of modernist cinema. The thesis does not follow the traditional and systematic neoformalist approach as described by Kristin Thompson and David Bordwell, although it employs some of its tools. Rather, it employs a selective approach, with an emphasis on specific elements and techniques that are most relevant for the purpose of describing both poetics and modernism. The final part of the thesis offers a unique perspective for an extensive, systematic and finally complete, and coherent research on modernism in Czech cinema.
