Possibilities of the Jolly-Seber method, its alternatives and available software for use in practical nature conservation

Abstract:

Existuje mnoho parametrů, které lze zjišťovat o populacích, mezi nejčastěji zkoumané a pro tuto práci stěžejní patří odhady velikosti populací. Toto téma je rozvíjeno již celá desetiletí a využívá řadu rozmanitých metod či jejich modifikací, založených na různých idejích výpočtů. Nicméně jejich společným cílem je dosáhnout odhadu co možná nejpřesnějšího. Výpočty v uzavřených populacích jsou více prozkoumané, přestože ty v otevřených populacích jsou univerzálnější. Proto se práce zaměřuje na výpočty v otevřených populacích s důrazem na metodu Jolly-Seber. Výrazný rozvoj výpočetní techniky přinesl zásadní možnosti ke zlepšování odhadů. Ten s sebou ovšem také přináší pro uživatele dilema, kterou z nabízených možností využít. Proto jsem se zaměřil na šest knihoven v programu R, založených na metodě Jolly-Seber, ať už přímo či modifikovaně a představil jsem jejich srovnání. V každé z knihoven byly vypočítány a mezi knihovnami porovnány odhady abundance a jejich střední chyby. Během tohoto postupu byly zaznamenány další postřehy, jako například formát vstupních dat či reakce na velmi malý datový vzorek, zjištěné během výpočtů. Také byly doplněny dodatečně zjištěné informace, jako délka výpočtu a stahovanost knihovny. Knihovny se liší celkovými abundančními odhady i středními chybami dílčích odhadů, specifické jsou také potřebné postupy. Každá z knihoven má své výhody a nevýhody a možnosti, shrnutí jejich rozdílů a také srovnání výsledků a uživatelské pohodlnosti nabízím v diskuzi.

Abstract:

Many parameters can be determined about populations, among which estimates of population sizes are most commonly studied and are central to this work. This topic has been developed for decades and utilizes a variety of methods or their modifications, based on different computational ideas. However, their common goal is to achieve the most accurate estimate possible. Calculations in closed populations are more explored, although those in open populations are more universal. Therefore, this work focuses on calculations in open populations, with an emphasis on the Jolly-Seber method. Significant developments in computational technology have brought fundamental possibilities for improving estimates. This also presents a dilemma for users on which of the offered options to utilize. Thus, I have focused on six libraries in the R program, based on the Jolly-Seber method, whether directly or modified and attempted to compare them. Using each library, estimates of abundance and their standard errors were calculated and compared among libraries. During this process, further insights were recorded, such as the format of input data or responses to a very small data sample, observed during calculations. Additional information such as computation time and library downloads have also been added. The libraries differ in overall abundance estimates and the standard errors of individual estimates, and specific procedures are also required. Each library has its advantages and disadvantages, and an overview of their differences as well as a comparison of results and user convenience is offered in the discussion.
