Predators of land snails: predation rate and interspecific variation

Abstract:

Početná společenstva suchozemských plžů mohou sloužit jako snadno dostupný zdroj potravy pro predátory z mnoha živočišných skupin. V rešeršní části této bakalářské práce jsem detailně shrnul predátory suchozemských plžů. Na základě literárních dat víme, že mezi nejběžnější predátory plžů patří brouci, dvoukřídlý hmyz, pavoukovci, masožraví plži a někteří obratlovci. Na základě výsledků analýzy vzorků z devíti sledovaných lokalit tří různých typů stanovišť (stepi, lužní lesy a vlhké louky) bylo prokázáno vyšší zastoupení jedinců suchozemských plžů postižených predací na stepních lokalitách. Mnoho predátorů ovšem ulity nepoškozuje, a tudíž bude skutečná míra predace pravděpodobně vyšší, než bylo zjištěno. Lze předpokládat, že nejběžnějším predátorem na zkoumaných lokalitách byli brouci. Dále byla zaznamenána predace dvoukřídlým hmyzem a velmi vzácně také plži. V případech dominantní kořisti nebo specifického predátora se zdá být vliv predace na populaci daného druhu plže poměrně výrazný.

Abstract:

Numerous snail communities can serve as an easily available source of food for predators from many animal groups. In the review part of this thesis, I summarized known predators of terrestrial snails in detail. Based on literature, we know that the most common predators of snails include Coleoptera, Diptera, Arachnida, carnivorous snails and some vertebrates. Based on the analysis of samples from nine studied sites of three different habitat types (steppes, alluvial forests and wet meadows), a higher proportion of individuals of terrestrial snails affected by predation was recorded in the steppes. Many predators, however, does not damage the shell when prey, and therefore the actual rate of predation of each locations is likely to be higher than observed. It can be assumed that beetles were the most common predator in the surveyed areas. Furthermore, the predation by Diptera and also very rarely by snails was recorded. In cases of dominant prey or specific predator the effect of predation on the snail populations seems to be probably significant.
