This thesis aims to demonstrate a positive shift in the television portrayal of African American family in American sitcoms by analysing four different themes related to the African American family, namely race and racial issues, racial socialization, the black church and religiousness, the extended family and the black community, in selected episodes of The Cosby Show and Black-ish.
