Individual development of children in children's home: carers and extrinsic motivation

Abstract:

Práce se zaměřuje na přístup vychovatelek k motivaci dětí v dětském domově. Cílem práce bylo zjistit, jakými metodami vychovatelky motivují děti v domově umístěné a zda se jim dostává individuální podpory. Výzkumu se účastnilo šest dětí ve věku od sedmi do šestnácti let a dvě vychovatelky jednoho oddělení dětského domova, jehož jméno z důvodu udržení anonymity neuvádíme. Data byla sbírána prostřednictvím polostrukturovaných rozhovorů s dětmi i vychovatelkami. U dětí byla navíc použita kresebná metoda (konkrétně kresba nejbližších). Zjistili jsme, že vychovatelky se snaží děti pozitivně motivovat, a to i nad rámec svých povinností. „Tety“ k dětem přistupují individuálně a snaží se o vytvoření rodinného prostředí, kde by se děti cítily dobře. Výzkum dále odhaluje problémy práce vychovatelů (poměr náročnosti práce a finančního ohodnocení, umístění problematického dítěte, fluktuace zaměstnanců), na kterých je možné perspektivně pracovat, aby byla individualizace péče ještě výraznější. Ukazuje se, že důležitým tématem může být i přístup vedení dětského domova, vzhledem ke zjištění, že zlepšení komunikace a nastavení pravidel v celém domově zlepšilo i situaci na oddělení.

Abstract:

The study focuses on the approach of carers in their motivation of children in children's home. The aim of the thesis was to find out which methods the carers use to motivate the children and whether they receive individual support. The research sample consisted of six children aged between seven and sixteen, and two female carers of one unit of the children's home. For maintaining the anonymity, we do not publish the name of the children’s home. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews with children and carers. In addition, the drawing method was used for children (specifically the drawing of the people closest to them). We have found that carers are trying to motivate children positively, even beyond their duties. The women approach children individually and try to create a family environment where children would feel comfortable. The research further reveals the problems of the carers’ work (the ratio of labor intensity and financial appraisal, placement of a problem child in the unit, fluctuation of employees), which can work forward to make the individualization of care even more distinguishable. It also appears to be an important topic in the management of the children's home, given that improved communication and set of rules have also improved the situation in the unit.
