Turkey's soft power in the Western Balkans region

Abstract:

Termín soft power, poprvé definovaný Josephem S. Nyem Jr. na počátku 90. let, představuje schopnost států ovlivnit ostatní aktéry pomocí své vlastní přitažlivosti, a to v oblastech jejich politických hodnot, zahraniční politiky a kultury. Cílem práce je identifikovat politickou transformaci Turecka z izolovaného sekulárního státu na aktivního aktéra v oblasti soft power a veřejné diplomacie, přičemž důraz je kladen na ideu osmanského dědictví a islámských hodnot jakožto společných determinantů. Práce si také klade za cíl představit a zhodnotit směřování soft power v zahraniční politice vládnoucí politické strany AKP a identifikovat instituty a oblasti veřejné diplomacie, na které se Turecko zaměřuje. Dále se práce zaobírá aktivitou těchto aktérů v regionu západního Balkánu.

Abstract:

The term soft power, first defined by Joseph S. Nye Jr. in the early 1990s, represents the ability of states to influence other actors through their own attractiveness, in the areas of their political values, foreign policy and culture. The aim of this work is to identify Turkey's political transformation from an isolated secular state to an active player in the field of soft power and public diplomacy, with an emphasis on the idea of Ottoman heritage and Islamic values as common determinants. The thesis also aims to introduce and evaluate the direction of soft power in the foreign policy of the ruling AKP political party and to identify the institutes and areas of public diplomacy that Turkey is focusing on. Furthermore, the work deals with the activity of these actors in the Western Balkans region.
