Chronology of outstanding social events in the Central European region in the light of climate variability

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá studiem významných společenských událostí posledních 2000 let v kontextu variability klimatu ve středoevropském prostoru s důrazem na území České republiky, a to z hlediska analýzy vybraných rekonstrukcí teploty vzduchu, srážek a sucha. Cílem práce bylo vytvoření chronologie vybraných společenských milníků a její zasazení do rekonstruovaných řad klimatotvorných prvků. V teoretické části byly charakterizovány stávající evropské a české klimatické rekonstrukce. Praktická část byla zaměřena na analýzu vybraných rekonstrukcí, konkrétně na analýzu extrémních hodnot klimatických charakteristik pomocí kvantilových hranic, díky nimž bylo možné zjistit vliv klimatické variability na významné historické události. Tímto způsobem bylo potvrzeno 17 společenských milníků, z nichž dlouhodobé (např. LIA, RGW) byly prokázány 1% kvantilovou hranicí a krátkodobější (třicetiletá válka, morová epidemie v polovině 14. století) se lépe projevily v českých rekonstrukcích pomocí 5% hranice. Práce tak přispěla k lepšímu pochopení provázanosti kolísání klimatu a společenských milníků v minulosti a prokázala možnost studia významných historických událostí prostřednictvím rekonstrukcí klimatu na území České republiky v budoucnosti.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis focuses on outstanding social events during the last 2000 years within the context of climate variability by analysing the selected air temperature, precipitation and drought reconstructions in the Central European region, emphasising the territory of the Czech Republic. The main objective was to compile a chronology of selected social events and their projection into reconstructions of climate variables. In the theoretical part, recent European and Czech climate reconstructions were characterised. The practical part was concentrated on the analysis of selected reconstructions, specifically on the analysis of extreme values of climate variables using quantiles thresholds. This approach allowed the determination of the influence of climate variability on historical events. Results confirmed 17 social milestones for which the long-term events (e.g. LIA, RGW) was demonstrated by 1st percentile quantile and the short-term events (e.g. Thirty Years‘ War, Black Death) was better documented by 5th percentile quantile. Therefore, the thesis contributed to a better understanding of the connection between climate fluctuation and significant social milestones and it proved a possibility of future research of historical events based on climate reconstructions in the territory of the Czech Republic.
