The relation between loneliness, social support and hope among the university students during the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá vztahem osamělosti, sociální opory a naděje u vysokoškolských studentů během pandemie COVID-19. Cílem studie bylo prozkoumat vztahy mezi sociální oporou, osamělostí a nadějí u studentů vysoké školy. Zvláštní pozornost byla věnována osamělosti, u které byly zkoumány rozdíly v její úrovni u různých skupin studentů. Data byla sesbírána pomocí dotazníkového šetření na souboru studentů vysoké školy (N = 462) ve věku od 19 do 27 let. Bylo zjištěno, že existuje negativní vztah mezi osamělostí a nadějí u vysokoškolských studentů a též negativní vztah sociální opory a osamělosti u studentů prvního semestru. Parciální korelací bylo však získáno zjištění, že naděje u studentů nikterak neovlivňuje vztah osamělosti a sociální opory. Dále výsledky naznačily, že studenti žijící bez blízké osoby jsou osamělejší než studenti žijící s rodiči, blízkými přáteli nebo partnerem/partnerkou. Studenti prvního semestru se též ukázali jako skupina dosahující vyšší úrovně osamělosti oproti studentům semestrů ostatních. Rozdíl u studentů studujících první semestr se studenty, kteří někdy v minulosti první semestr již studovali, se průkazný nejevil. V globálním pohledu regresní analýza ukázala, že statisticky významnými prediktory naděje jsou osamělost a semestr studia, nikoli však způsob bydlení nebo sociální opora.

Abstract:

This thesis is about the relations between loneliness, social support and hope during the COVID-19 pandemic with regard to university students. The goal of the study was to examine the relations between social support, loneliness and hope when it comes to university students. There was a significant focus on loneliness where differences in loneliness levels were being examined amongst various groups of students. The data was collected through surveys which were filled in by university students (N = 462) at the age of 19-27. It was discovered that there exists a negative relation between loneliness and hope with regards to university students, as well as a negative relation between social support and loneliness. However, it was discovered through partial correlation that hope does not have any influence on the relation between loneliness and social support. What’s more, the results implied that students who live on their own feel lonelier than those who live with their parents, close friends or a partner. First semester students turned out to be the group that had higher levels of loneliness in comparison to students who had studied for longer. The difference between freshers who had never studied at a university before and freshers who had already passed their first semester someplace else in the past was not conclusive. From a global point of view, a regression analysis showed that statistically significant predictors of hope are loneliness and the semester in question, not circumstances surrounding accommodation or social support.
